Default why does my Impy SS roll like a manual tranny?

We just bought this 08 Impala SS with 32k mi 2 weeks ago. We've noticed that it tends to roll like a manual tranny car. if im sitting on a hill at a stop light and i take my foot off the brake, the car will start to roll back down the hill. ive never had an auto tranny car do that. typically, it either creeps forward or just sits there. and im not talking about a large hill either. i also noticed it in a parking lot. i parked facing downhill. i put it in reverse to back out and as soon as i take my foot off the brake the car starts rolling forward down the hill. something doesnt seem right here. the car otherwise drives and shifts fine so im not sure what it could be. is this a normal quirk for this car or is something wrong?

Mine and a few others here have mentioned that it does that. Not a "problem" unless you hate keeping your foot on the brake. Hah. Dont know what the cause of it is though.

It does this because it has a high stall in the torque converter. If I am wrong someone will chime in and let me know.

I've noticed the same thing. I thought it was strange too.

high stall, low STR torque converter to mask the DOD operation. Totally normal. It is also the reason for the relatively poor low speed fuel economy until the converter locks up.

So dropping DOD and changing the stall would make this car into the next in town Prius?

I can brake mine above the 3k mark...it always seems to flash to 3k when I jump on the gas too.

I checked into seeing if the converter used in the 3.5 liter Impalas would fit our cars. My buddy's shop that build trannies didn't have anything handy to compare, but he thought it probably wouldn't work.

I would gladly give up some stall for a couple more MPG in town and better feel. I've never liked a loose converter in a street car.

Crazy, huh?

I love the blue one in your avatar. My folks actually had an '86 Regal Limited that was that color. It had the Olds 307 motor with a 4 bbl and was a freaking dog. The blue crushed velour interior was nice, though. I always thought car with with an LC2 swapped in would be an awesome sleeper, wire wheels and all.

Are you the original owner?

yay for buicks! i see you havea te44 too and alky. i had one of the original alky kits from SMC but i outgrew it and needed a progressive setup. tried theirs but wasnt happy with it. ive never gotten around to playing with razor's kit but someday i might. my next project is a vacuum brake conversion though. i need to drive mine more. its probably seen under 150 miles the past couple years.

for everyone else, thanks for the input on the impala and rolling. seems odd they used such a loose high stall converter for this car considering what it is. oh well, atleast i know not to worry about it. just gotta inform the wife to get used to it.

We Buick guys gotta stck together...There just aren't that many of us.

I have Razor's kit, and I gotta tell you, it was the best mod I ever did. I can run about 22 PSI on pump gas with zero KR. It's worth every penny.

I did the brake conversion a few years ago. I just got sick and tired of replacing the PowerMaster parts every year or so. Brake feel is much better, adn I don't ever have to worry about the system failing when I need it most.

What kind of mileage do you get in yours?

Higher stall the DOD has nothing really to do with it.

Cause somebody in GM put in the wrong converter. Don't worry though, I think it was an accident. Also, I'm surprised GM hasn't called for a recall.

You dont want the one from a 3.5 anyway. Its stall at like 1200 rpm. Way too low. Makes the 3.5 feel very crappy off idle.

He was saying that the car has a higher stall because of DOD, so you don't notice it changing modes as much. If you play around with a tuner and jack up the TCC lockup tables, you can really fell it go in and out of DOD because the TCC unlocks during the transition. You can make it feel like another shift. The loose converter and less agressive lock ups mask that roughness; I didn't notice it stock. If you are not steady with your right foot and keep crossing the throttle threshold (I moved mine up to 10%), you can watch your engine RPMs jump all over the place as it locks and unlocks the TCC while DOD starts and stops. There are delays and all of that, but if you try you can really mess with the computer.
