Default Lower end rebuild

I picked up a 2001 LS1 for a couple bucks and was told the engine ran fine when pulled. Little did I know was the tiem they pulled it was about 2 and half years ago.

I put the motor in my 944 and start it up, it smokes a little. I figured it just had unburnt deposits from sitting. Then it kept smoking and smoking, buring oil.

I have not done a compression test do to the temprature dropping and the snow falling. But it seems to me like the rings are stuck, or worse case broken.

I need to know if I can just replace the rings with some homing to the cylinders or do I have to get the crank balanced and all the stuff?

What I worry about is the cyl walls, a hone is really all that you can do.

After the weather straightens out, do a compression test and leak down. That will tell you what is up.
