GXP fuel mileage What kind of real fuel mileage highway and city are you getting with the 5.3 engine. Looking at getting one of these, just wanted to know. I have a 97 GP with 3.8 now ready to upgrade. Thanks .

Last trip, sustained 60-65 for a few hundred miles I averaged 22.5ish on the tank with 4 people in the car and a trunk full of stuff on cruise control.
If you look at the revised EPA ratings the car gets 25 on the highway and as we all know that is high so 22ish isn't bad considering.

right now in this lovely michigan winter i am getting about 180-190 miles to a tank, using premium of coarse. not sure if you wanna get this car for gas mileage purposes

Don't believe the DIC for a second, calculate your own fuel economy by setting the trip odometer, then at your next fillup divide the mileage by gallons to get your real fuel economy.

from severe stop and go city driving, I get about 14 to 15 mpg. straight highway driving going a steady 70 or so, it can get up to about 26mpg. of course if you set the cruise at 55 or 60 you might get up to the high 20s even.

I did and it was 26 mpg. The DIC is very close, my DashHawk, however, was extremely off...
lol i dont think i've ever gotten even that close to getting that kind of milage..

I think the DIC is as good as anything, as long as you are using the stock fuel injectors. I know that there is a lot of variation in gas pump pressure switches, so not every gas pump will fill your tank up to the same spot.
As for DOD helping/hurting, I know that it helps me. I turned it off and chocked on how much worse my mileage got when cruising/coasting. It only averages out to 2-3mpg, but the DIC will read out a 6-10mpg difference under the right circumstances. It doesn't help in start/stop traffic, but that's not what it was meant to do anyway.
Also, you can always tune for better mileage and more power, but you will of course increase emissions. The emissions bins are really tight, and it doesn't take a lot of extra emissions to fall into a lower bin. That litle bit extra pollution means a lot to GM and the government.

Sadly my GXP seems to go through a tank of gas in no time. My GTP got better mileage and was quicker with a few mods. This car is what I have now so I try to make the best of it.

In city driving, I average 11.4 mpg per tank. In mixed driving where I'm maintaining 35 to 70 mph for periods of time, I average 14.2 mpg per tank. On the highway only, I average about 22.4 to 26.8 per tank depending on wind direction.
Not a very fuel efficient car for driving in the city. The stop and go and sitting in traffic at idle really kills it. Slowly accelerating up to your speed also seems less fuel efficient than somewhat quickly getting up to speed. Slowly letting the engine groan up to 30 mph will kill your mileage. Better to get up to 30 in ~5 seconds.
