Chevrolet Camaro 1967-2002 - Need info on a 1972 split bumper Camaro

I just got my hands on a 72 Camaro, I’ve always wanted one of these since I saw a issue with Dale Jr’s 72. And finally since I graduated from school and got a decent paying job Im finally able to afford a new toy.

It needs a little bit of work but nothing to severe. I dont know to much about the 2nd gen Camaros so I was wondering if someone can answer a few questions for me that has some knowledge.

I was going crazy looking for a split bumper Camaro, unfortunately I wasn’t able to find one in my price range. My 72 has a solid bumper. Can I convert it to the split bumper? Also I need more info about the split bumper. Was it a RS/SS option? Z28?

Is there a difference between a split bumper body style and a solid bumper body style? Fenders, bumpers, hood?

Thanks

The fenders, hood and coresupport are the same everything else is different once you forward of the hood.. You will need different header panel, lower valance, turn signals, bumpers, urathane Nose panel, and bumpers.. Im not sure on the bumper bracket, I think they work on both..

Dale Jr's car is actually a standard front end car with R/S parts made to it.. What they did is that they took the standard front end and put the R/S signal lights in the top while keeping the stadard signal lights under the bumper and then added split bumpers to it instead of the full bumper..

Base Model could come with a 250ci Straight 6, 307ci SBC or a 350sbc.. Im not sure what you are asking here, but the packages that where around in 72 where Coupe, RS, SS, RS/SS, Z28 /RSand Z28..

You can use the split bumpers on the standard frontend. I've done it and turned out pretty nice. Everything can be modified to work if you really wanted. I like the look of the split bumpers but didn't really like the lemon sucker RS grill extensions.

What did you have to modify to get the Split bumper to fit? Any pictures by any chance?

Thanks

Here is a pic I found on ebay. With the standard frontend and split bumpers.

The bumper mounting holes on the frame are in the same spots. So you won't have to worry about that. I did it back in about 95. So I can't remember all the details. At the most you may need the rs bumper brackets, but in reality the only real difference is one is two piece vs a one piece. They both mount in the same locations with no supports or brackets in the center of the one piece bumper. One of these years I'll get another early second gen.

Any Update on your 1972 Camaro project?

Just picked up one myself. About the same condition as yours!

Where are you located?

As stated, the split bumpers will bolt up on your car without any changes. They wont be "correct" unless you change the header pnls. I own a 70 SS with the full bumper and like it.

Their is a book called the camaro white book, it should help you out in figuring out what it is and the options packages it may or may not have been optioned with.

I love the split bumper look they bolt right on the standard nose as well. And if you want to find out more about you car if you open the hood on the driver side right where the windshield and cowl vent meet up there will be a trim tag. There are some codes on there and if you type in those options codes on an rpo decoder they will tell you if it was a ss or a z28 body color interior color, and a few other things. If that is missing than there is a slight chance under the back seat there will be an order sheet or even on top of the gas tank. Any questions pm me i have 2 of there cars.
