My daily driver Firebird V6 is overheating lately. I noticed the temp gauge at a higher level then normal and kept an eye on it. It was steadily climbing so I turned on the heater and the heater was forcing room-temperature air out (almost cold air). The temp would go almost to redline but quickly "defuses" and drops back to normal operating temps. It does several of these rise-and-drop cycles during the ride.

Any suggestions on what to check out?
