Default Heads for 402 to make 500 HP at the wheels NA??

Hey guys. I am looking to build a new motor for my 99Z28. I am looking at probably doing a 402 or a 408 or something in that area. My goal on motor is to make 500 HP at the wheels with this motor. My question is what heads would be good to help me accomplish this that hopefully won't break the bank. Should I go with a set of TFS 225's or AFR's or even something else? I am not looking to cut corners but just looking for the cheapest head that will let me achieve my goal. Any thoughts? Thanks

Tyler

most 40x motors can make 500rwhp without much trouble no matter what heads (shy of bone stock) are on them.

any of the TFS heads would be a great head for it, but you could go with some stage 3 243s as well.

Allngn_C5 recently switched from AFR 205s to TFS 215s on his 402 and got a NICE gain in top end.

Nice numbers. Makes me think my estimate of 525 NA for my new combo is pretty conservative. I'm running AFR 225s hand finished by LPE, 247/255 .625/.625 114 cam and 11.75:1 compression.

Bigger cam, more compression, more air flow with the larger heads !!! I'll bet a DJ shows your car making 560 rwhp !!! Especially since your afr 225's were re worked.

My only question is will your exhaust flow enough to not restrict the potential ? Sorry if I missed your exhaust, what are you running (True Duals)?

EDIT Let me scale back my guess some due to missing the OBVIOUS fact that you are running a stalled auto. 530s to 540's at the wheels !!!! Just a guess though..

Kooks 1 7/8 to 2" stepped headers, 3 1/2 in Y, 3 inch SW cat back. Still debating duals. Probably come down to money. Just ordered Midwest FAB9 and some Bogarts. Gotta' let the Mastercard cool off!

Running a 3 disc converter. If I really want to go for a big number, I can just lock it. I ran it with my old 382 combo and it really worked well with the spray. Ran 136.6 mph last year. Looking for 140-142 this year on a 200. Time will tell.

I vote L92's. Only thing is, you'll have to run an LS3/L67, Fast, etc intake with square ports. But, they flow 320+ cfm stock and will easily make 500rwhp on a 402. They can be had or around $400-$700. I just picked up a brand new set for $650 shipped.

See thats what was looking for. I really dont want to spend $2400 on a set of heads if I can get some L92's for that cheap. So you think the L92's will work fine for what I am looking for then? Where did you get yours for $650 shipped from? Is that just the bare head?

I paid $800 for my Heads, Valves, Pedistals, Off-set Rockers, and a Holley 90mm TB when I got mine..this was in early 2007, I've had them since then.

Like I was sayin, I have no doubt mine will crank over 500 at the wheels..and that is at 10.9:1 with 93 octane. It's got an older spec'd close-split Cam in it too, not many people running that anymore. That particular Cam profile has been having lower Dyno Numbers then some of the wide-split Cams, but it will still move.

You've got a killer exhaust setup already. Do you have a cutout, or better yet is a cutout even needed ?

Pat G when building his 500+ rwhp h/c bolt on 346 WS6 used a custom 4" Y, not sure if it was needed, but couldn't have hurt him at all, especially up top. You may look there but may not need it.

Looking at your heavy duty driveline, you are not going to have a Dyno Queen. (Who cares though right, considering your car seems to be setup for the track vs chasing a number on the dyno) However you will have a very reliable/durable car that can handle the power and will kick *** at the track !

my setup

Lid, FAST 92, 402 @ 11.1 CR, PRC stage 2.5 heads, pacesetter 1 3/4 coated, no cats n magnaflow catback. custom mild cam for 402, makes about 490 - 495 wheel hp... with better heads and a ported manifold you will be well into the 500-520rwhp area...

I got them from another member on here, and they're complete, minus rockers. You can get a pair, complete, from Scoggin Dickey for ~$900, I think.

You said they are complete, what kind of springs are on them? Do they come with a spring that will allow for a .600+ lift cam?
