Default 02 WS6 Vs 2009-2010 BMW M3

Well I was traveling down 121 on my way to my buddies house who is back from UT for the weekend. I see some familiar halos in the rear view. I pass my exit hoping he will play. Its a brand new style M3. White. It was soo sexy. We stared each other down, and he gassed it a little, maybe dropping one gear. I got behind him and put it in 5th so i could catch up to his slight throttle punch.
I get behind him and there is a car in front of us, and an 18 wheeler next to us. I knew that as soon as he could, he would fly around the car in front of us, and it would be on. Well i knew this was coming, so i dropped it into 4th around 75 mph (keep in mind i have 410s) As soon as he could, he flew to the right and it was on. MY car screamed alive in 4th gear and had all the power within seconds. All throughout 4th he maintained that 1-1.5 car lengths on me. I could NOT gain any ground. DEAD EVEN. and i mean DEAD even. He could not pull i could not gain. Once red line came around, my shift light going nuts, i granny shift to 5th because (no new master cylinder yet) and to my surprise, it actually goes in! (have been having issues) so he gains like half a car. i run out 5th gear, and again no gains for either of us. dead even. i dropped back. Let him go because he didn't seem like the kinda guy who would understand a 3 honk and a lower roll (60 woulda been killer for 3rd gear and 410s)

looked up price for the car. retail at 55-65K
Its nice to know that a car thats now 8 years old, with a little over 1k in mods(bolt ons) is keeping up with a 55k BMW.
Lets just say it made my day and weekend

Specs:
Type: V8
Displacement 4.0 Liters
Horsepower 420 hp
Torque 295 / 3900@RPMS
Redline at RPM: 8400
Final Drive Ratio 3.85:1
Weight lb: 3648

NOW: i have beaten every other older style M3 i have ever raced, even played with them. But these new v8s with the 8400redline and gear ratio let alone they arnt pigs, are something to be reckoned with!
Woulda loved to get him from a dig so the advantage in tq would be seen
Now only if i had a cam or a 100-150 shot!

Sounds exactly right. The e92 M3's are mid to high 12 second cars. It really sounds like a drivers race.

I really am not too sure what you were trying to say here. I would hardly call an e92 a by todays standards.

I guess what i meant to say was, all new cars are pig

but seriously i've loved M3 since the E30, and IMO until E46 they still weigh ok but E92/E90 is just too heavy for an M3, i don't understand what the heck BMW stuff up into the M3 to make it that heavy, if it were for luxury purpose i'd say E46 M3 has an above average interior, so i don't really see the point of adding stuff into the new M3

Well, a BMW owner is going to want a nice interior, with fancy gizmo's. The E92 interior is a large upgrade over the E46 (not that the E46 had a bad interior). While it may not seem necessary to you and I, we aren't BMW's target market.

With the safety regulations getting more and more strict, and the trend of big *** wheels and what not, all cars are increasing in weight. BMW is offering a car that is as light as they could get it, while still meeting safety standards, and offering the comforts that BMW enthusiasts have become accustomed to.

I don't think the E92 is a pig by todays standards.

Great race, man! Those new M3's are sick looking and fast as hell from what I've seen. Do they make basic mods for them or are they pretty much either stock or turboed?

As with every M3 so far they pretty much come maxed out N/A wise out of the factory, Intake and exhaust will get you minimal gains but still some. After that unless you go into custom headwork or other things that cost ridiculous amounts of money for way less power then any form of FI....well they usually boost them before it gets to that point lol.

But there is also nitrous which some BMW guys are pretty knowledgable about.

From what I understand, if you are into modding you would be better off going with the 335. With a few upgrades they are supposed to be able to destroy the M3.

But I concur with what you said as far as the modability of the M3. If one wants to mod them, it is very expensive, and will show moderate gains until one steps up to FI.

Nice run. I actually thought you would have done a little better with your numbers and gears. Is 5th a little tall even with the 4:10s? Was his 6m or 7spd DCT? I even wonder if his was modded too.

I thought full bolt-on Fbodys were around 330rwhp, am I wrong? 353rhwp is nice!

Well i started at about 80 in 4th, and 5th gear is tech an overdrive gear. i have no idea what tranny he had. and when i shifted to 5th it was pretty granny slow, wanting to make sure it actualy went in. im a 6sp with ls6 intake so bolt ons yeild me more rwhp. horsepower wise if i lose 15% though drivetrain loss, puts be at about 415 at the motor. which is basicaly the same thing as an m3.
his gearing is a little more favorable towards a highway roll as well, however not by much. i also am not tuned, and feel if i was, i would have more usable power throughout the RPM band. but money is tight i keep getting stupid tickets.

I do know fact, if it was a 60 roll, i would have full 3rd gear, and feel within 3rd and 4th i coulda lessened to the gap. if we woulda honked it off at 60 i woudl proly pull a car to 120. and if it was a 20 roll, goodbye m3!

Its always fun to take down a high end sports car with a car that's worth 5-10 times less. I'm sure most folks that drive those cars don't really care that ours are generally faster because obviously they're not as nice or refined, but a small part of them must be embarrassed. It reminds me in HS of taking down a 3000GT SL (non-turbo) with my basically stock Civic DX hatchback (only ~105 hp but barely 2000 lb).... the 3000GT's were the s**t back then - he probably could have beaten me if he knew how to drive but I guess his rich parents just bought the car not driving lessons. I think he must have been granny shifting below redline and I used to absolutely hammer the civic and knew exactly when to shift to avoid the limiter (nuked about 3 pairs of CV joints driving the thing like I did - sorta the 10-bolt of the Honda world).

If I won the lottery I'd probably buy an M3, though. Actually I'd probably buy a Cayman S but same type car. But I'd also drop a forged 408 screamer in my Z to stay true to my roots.

That's too bad in a way. Having the option for basic bolt-ons is always fun because it allows for cheaper modding and it makes the cars more of a mystery as to how fast they will be. When you take that way it means that they are either stock or fast as ballz.
