Squeal ONLY at idle
No luck with search, but I have a squeal at idle and only at idle.
500-1500 rpm, no matter if its in park or going down the street or just free revving, thats the only time it squeals(breaks up between 1500-2000). No temp problems, water pump isnt new but its not old either. Belt doesnt look bad, all tensioner pulleys have been pulled and repacked, installed a new alternator about a week or 2 ago with no noise until yesterday. No charge problems, no nothin'. PS fluid level is fine, no change in the noise when i turn the wheel and everything.
i torqued the pulley on the alternator bracket (and the rest) to 37 ft/lbs as instructed, could the dust shields be making that type of noise?
easiest way to indicate a bad alternator pulley bracket?
is the PS pump pulley known to go bad?
any thought/advice is appreciated
EDIT: Problem solved, pulley was tightened too much and the dust shield was rubbing.

my noob is showing, but what do you mean by main drive? crank?
sounds like its coming from the top side near the PS pump but its so hard to actually tell, ill probably just pull the belt in the morning and spin everything by hand and go from there

While it's sitting there squeeling, pull the dipstick tube. If the sound goes away, it's to much crank case pressure. LS1's make some awefull noise when this happens, sounds just like you were discribing.

This time around it was just the dust shield on the pulley. I tightened it while the alternator bracket was off the car and who woulda guessed, it was too tight I pulled it off the car and noticed the shiny rings on the shield where it had been rubbing and just torqued it properly the second time.
Thats why you never neglect the 7 P's
