transmisson M6 whining?? why?
I have a 99 LS1 CamaroSS. out of no where the other day the transmission started whining to the rpms in 1st and 2nd gear, only. But by the time I got home, 1st 2nd 3rd 5th all whines now as well. I have parked it til I can come to a conclusion what I could do to fix it, or if I need a new tranny. Any body had similar problems?? or ideas what is could be? Just saying the transmisson shifts completely fine, rides though the gears smooth, and reverse is working perfect too. It just whines with the rpms pretty loud, that's the only way I can explain it really. Help?

the sound is coming directly underneth the shifter I'd say. When I'm driving that's where it projects from. And from the outside you can hear it whine with the rpms under the exhaust sound, but this is only when it is in gear driving. If it's in neutral and you just accl the engine the sound isn't made, it only happens in 1,2,3,5 gears. It could be something else?

Check and make sure you have fluid in it. You dont here about T56's whining too much on here. It's usually other things with them. If it has fluid and your not sure when it was changed last then drain and refill it with dexron III ATF or maybe a synthetic version of ATF. It takes 4qts. I know sometimes the tranny sounds will transfer through the shifter if you leave your hand on it while driving also.

My 3rd gear has whined since I had bought the car. I had my trans serviced and everything it still does it. Its been 20k miles and no problems at all. A gm tech used a term gear rollover he said its normal some are noisier than others though. But with your being all but 4th I'd say u prolly got something going on.

thanks everybody, it was the rear tranny seal that went bad, it was completely torn more then half way around the circle. I replaced the seal and filled it back up with the right fluid and amount. The noise I was descirbing is gone now, but all i hear is low whines due to not having a rubber boot on the shifter.
