Default spools on the street !

Theres so many different opinions on running a spool on the street. What do you find are the pro's and con's.

post up your experience and your tire combo. I hear more sidewall is better, but how does a wide rim compare. such as a 17x11.

I've been running a spool in my 12 bolt with 4.10s for 2 years on the street and I hardly know its back there...Now I don't DD the car, but put about 5000 miles a year on it and run 325 50 R15 M/T drag radials...A soft tire with a tall sidewall such as what I use tends to absorb alot of the noise, skips, chirps associated with a spool...Been caught in the rain a few times with it and it wasn't too bad...would not want to make a habit of it though...remember that your ABS will no longer be operational, so panic braking will be different than you may be used to.

I've got a spooled 9" in my m6 SS and I drive it everywhere with zero problems. Well almost zero, the spool is a little harder on the tires but it no big deal. Once you get use to the feel of it you won't even know its there.

We have a spool in this CTS-V. http://www.exoticperformanceplus.com...Car.php?car=29 The customer has put a lot of miles on the car, and does not mind the spool at all. Bob

With all the options of modern traction third members. And a properly set up posi unit its not very safe to run a spool and it is in my view not necessary. I run a 9" ford with a posi on the street with 1100 HP and its fine. But i wont judge anyone for running a spool if they think its cool scrubbing tires. Or have good luck with them. If the pavement is questionable a spool can be a hand full. Most of the final drives i rebuild for failure are ring and pinion failures. There is posi units that fail but mostly the ring and pinion. Remember there are several posi units available that are extreamly strong. Just my $.02 cents. Thanks

Get it on wet roads and hold on for dear life. Once it breaks traction, things are going to get bad.

No probs here. I didn't even notice the spool when I switched over. I didn't notice any noise but that could be because of the open headers.

They are a little harder on the tires but not nearly as hard on them as my foot in the accelerator is.

I went with a spool in my 9'' for the same reason as many - stronger, cheaper, and lighter.
AND I didn't want to take any chances in having a posi go bad at the track - the last thing I wanted was for the posi to let go while hanging two wheels in the air...
The car is not a daily driver though (3-4k a year)

depends on the clutch in a stick car, I run a spec 5 and it makes clutching out while turning kind of a bitch because the car is fighting you the whole way. other than a parking lot, you probably won't notice it.

I run spool in my 8.8 - 4:30 gears with 335/35/17's Hoosier DR. and not bad on the street, Just in tight turns, it tries to fight its self. But over all it fine. I wont change back. Wet roads can be dangers in curves.Just be carefull, and remember you have a spool in the rear.

I would just go with the spool in S60 you wont regret it a posi unit will blow out if you get wheel hop at the track. get the spool and dont worrry about a thing. Ive ran mine for 2 years and it awesome with a M6 and 4.56 gears also takes off hard.
