Default T56 failing me...grinding and slipping

My t56 has started to grind more frequently. It grinds mostly on down shifts and occasionlly will not go into third gear when pushed. Also the 1rst gear is tough to get into at stop lights sometimes.

I've taken it to two transmisson places and two mechanics. I've heard everything from "needs a rebuild with new solenoids" to "needs hydralic fuild bleed." I'm hoping it's the clutch or air in the fluid but at this point I'm up for anything. But i don't want to pay for one thing just to find out it was something else.

Please help. It's embrassing grinding all over the place and shifting hard. What should I do first?

Who ever told you it needed a full rebuild with new solenoids, avoid that shop at all cost. They are morons.......

Does it grind or is it hard going into 1st gear or reverse while sitting still?

Yeah it's never a good sign when the guy says "well it's gonna cost a lot" without any reasoning.

Well sitting still, it is hard to get into first gear sometimes, and it's not as smooth as I think it should be if I just went through the six gears with the car not moving...reverse is always easy though.

Well I don't know about you but I think anyone that says "it's gonna cost a lot" is implying that I can't pay for it or they don't want to do the work.

Anyways what were you thinking transmisson-wise

The solenoids they are probably referring to are commonly found in automatic transmissions. The very fact that the person told you this tells me they don't have a clue what they are talking about. I would find another shop that is more knowledgable with T56 units.

I see what you mean. Good point. I'll try to see what the local forums have to say about a reputable shop around here.

In the mean time, I'm going to try to find someone to help me bleed the fluid this weekend just to see if it helps. The fluid is darker than I would like it to be and it seems to grind more when it's cold outside. Maybe some fresh fluid will help?

I have the exact problem with my trans.

but also mine will grind when I let off the gas and the engine tries to slow the car down it sounds nasty. I get no grinding when I do low rpm shifts and take time to match rpms.

but shifting under high rpm loads I get alot of grinding and have to force it into gear.

Im thinking my synchros are bad. I could check the fluid but I dont know how.
