Will I run out of motor?
I receintly purchased this car to get back into drag racing. My problem is the previous owner ran it on an 1/8 mile strip, and it has 5.43 gears. I want to get back to running the 1/4 mile, but I'm afraid there is too much gear and I don't want to run out of motor before the lights. I've tried most of the online calculators but I don't believe them as they all come up with different numbers. I have 33" tall tires, 4500 converter, THM350 w/brake, 400hp 2 stage NOS fogger. I have most of the receipts from the previous owner and called the cam company that made the cam. They say the motor should make it's power from 5500 to 7800. Can anyone advise, or steer me in the right direction? Thanks. Mike

Thanks for the reply. This alegedly ran in the low to mid 5's in the 1/8th and never heard a MPH figure. The guy that built it is amongst the missing and I can't get ahold of him for any other information. I realize this is kind of a crap-shoot, but I didn't know if anyone else out there may have something around the same weight etc. The car weights approx 3500 lbs. Thanks.

If they are all coming up with different numbers, you are doing it wrong.
At 7800 RPM you are doing 141 mph. That won't be enough gear for a car that is capable of running mid 8's.
Of course, saying that car runs mid 8's @ 3500# also says it has upwards of 1000 hp. Does it?
My advice is just to take it to the track. Depending on how much hp you actually have, it might be just enough.

The motor has 640 flywheel hp, along with a 400hp fogger spray, so 1000 hp is pretty close, I'd say. I just wasn't sure, figuring that the other guy must have had it close to that rpm when he ran the 1/8th. Common sense would lead me to think I would run out of motor before I got to the end of the 1/4.

I chickened out on using the 5.43's. I ordered a set of 4.86's which will make me feel a little safer. An explosion at half track would make me sad. I also have changed from the Sportsman Fogger 250hp to a Pro Shot 500hp. Not that I'm gonna spray it all at once, I'll sneak up on it. Does anyone have any good pictures of a roll bar camera mount bracket? C'mon summer!!!!
