Default A/c blows warm + coolant smell in interior?

Just wondering if anybody's had a similar combined issue.
My a/c blows warm plus I get a slight coolant smell inside my car if it is sitting in traffic.
Would a bad heater core cause these two combined issues at once?
I don't think the core is leaking b/c the passenger side carpet is bone dry.
Also, as far as the a/c is concerned, I can hear the compressor turn on/off. Plus, I said the hell w/ it and bought one of those recharge kits everyone says not to use. According to the included gauge, there was still plenty of pressure in the system however it did have room to take some refrigerant. After following all instructions, it blew cold for a few days then went right back to being warm.
Any insight?

A/C blows warm for several reasons. In your case, you have a leak that needs fixing. The coolant smell only comes from the heater core, but at the moment it's not leaking bad enough yet to puke on your carpet. You'll find the inside of your heater box is wet, though.

I figured I had two independent problems, just wasn't sure if one might have been releated to the other or not.
Is there any downfall to bypassing the heater core? Through research I've found that this topic came up before, but no-one was ever really able to give a difinitive answer.

Honestly I'd probably just leave it bypassed if there's no repercussions. I live in Florida and have absolutely no use for my heater. Plus, it would eliminate the possibility of that thing leaking all over my carpet.
