Default Trailer inspection in Mass?

Hello

I recently purchased a 18' open trailer to haul my car to and from the track.

I was at the RMV and they told me I need to have it inspected.

Is this true?

The trailer will not be used for business, (IE landscape or towing company) just personnel use.

Has anyone else had to get their personnel trailer inspected?

If so, what do I need to be aware of.

Thanks
Jason

If your trailer is NOT used for any business purposes you do NOT need to get it inspected. Personal use trailers are exempt from the new laws.

If the vehicle towing the trailer has commercial plates then you do need to get it inspected. If it has regular passenger car plates then you do not have to get it inspected. This started with the new sticker system in October 2008. I do inspections so I have done some trailers.

lol did they charge you 5 bucks why you were in there....pfft you should have asked for information. I know are personal trailer was not inspected. We just have plates and pay for registration.

Its MA, so I wouldnt be surprised if they now make you get your trailer inspected before you can register it.

A single, full or semi-trailer, used in commerce, with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating over 3,000 lbs or a truck/trailer combination that exceeds 10,000 GCVWR (gross combined vehicle weight rating) needs a commercial inspection every year.

This is the line the confuses me... it is some what open to interpretation. Does it mean any GCVWR over 10k or only commercial over 10K. It doesn't make a lot of sense because unless you are pulling a dolly with a Kia you are going to be over 10k so what the point of the 3k trailer weight? Ohhhh how I love stupid laws. We pay tolls, excise tax, sales tax on cars, 5 bucks to ask a question, and yet my road is still all pot holes....

I have 2 trailers and asked at the garage last summer when getting a sticker for my truck. They weren't even clear on it but said if I didn't pull the trailers for commercial use, I should be fine and don't need it inspected. No issues yet and I pull about 10k lbs. at times...

The gcvwr is only applicable to commercial vehiles. If you have passenger car plates you are EXEMPT from getting them inspected.

CT they didn't inspect mine... and that trailer's rated at 12000 lbs (2 6000 lb axles)

I didn't tell them that, they asked and I just told them I have no idea, and the guy put some weight on it, what I don't know.

My 2500HD ram is rated at 9800lbs as well, and I have no doubt that it will do a good bit more then that, being that the running gear and frame are exactly the same as a single axle 3500, and they rate those as 12000 lbs, only differnce is 1 extra leaf spring on the 1 ton.

Not gonna worry about it, I got the plates on everything, the trailer went thru the VIN verification process, guy looked it over and said it looked real nice and that was it. good to go in my eyes.
