It's simpler if you unplug the Wiring Harness for the Fuel Pump..it's next to the connector for the Rear ABS..

You probably dont want to risk a spark while the gas tank is open. Disconnect the battery especially when working on the fuel system. Why not use a zippo for lighting while your changing the pump

i would argue you don't "need" to disconnect the battery as long as there's no key in the ignition and no chance of the ignition turning on which would then put electrical power near where you are working, or as long as no one is in the car stepping on the brake or something like that. Otherwise there is no electrical power near the fuel pump so disconnecting the battery doesn't do anything. If you're that worried about it, then why aren't you disconnecting the battery every time you go to fill up at the gas station? Or if you're working on it in your garage, should you also turn the breakers off in your house... you don't want to risk any sparks?
Not that I'm saying you should not disconnect the battery, if I were dropping the tank then I would pull the battery to be safe because it's the other factors that will cause the problems, but if it's a completely controlled environment and the key is out of the car then what is the hazard?

I'll guarantee that shops don't disconnect/pull the battery when they do it.

I have never once in my life disconnected power for a fuel filter or pump change. After a couple of pumps and dozens of filters I'm still here to talk about it. Keep the keys out of the ignition and nothing will go wrong.

It's great to be safe when working on cars, but there's a point when it becomes overkill. I mean, would you install a seatbelt on your kitchen chair? Or wear a bullet proof vest every time you go to a bank or liquor store?

This reminds me of the time I was changing my brother's fuel filter. For some dumbazz reason he decided to turn the key on. I had to take a bath and change clothes before I finished the job.

^^It's funny to me cause he didn't do it on purpose..

A few months ago I was changing the Fuel Pump and Filter on my truck. I took the Pump out then went to change the Filter. I got under it to change the Filter and one of my friends waited till I unbolted it, then he looked at the lines and crawled back out from underneath. About 3 seconds later a big blast of gas from the Feed Line hits me square in the chest. I crawl out and look up like WTF.. the dumbasses took my Compressor Line with my Blower Tip and blasted it into the Feed Line..he had crawled under to see what line it actually was before he did it.

I was laughin the whole time..it was pretty ****** funny..
