Yes they are illegal because you are changing/removing the position of the cats. If you really wanna run them, then put them on right on after you smog.

you know CA has so much BS with there emissions and smog regulations. Now come on dont you guys agree that an engine is like a huge vacumm pump the more air in, and the more air out the better the engine runs and is more EFFICIANT. so by helping the engine breath and get rid of that air actually causes everything to be better. does that make sense and im correct? sheesh come on CA....

LTs are actually illegal anywhere in the U.S. California just happens to have a visual and makes things a bit harder. I have never had to deal with it, but I know I have heard that sometimes so long as you have cats and can pass the sniffer you're fine. depends on how observant/energetic the tech is. Or if you can find somebody that will just pass you that's even better.

honestly your beating a dead horse...

CA is full of tree hugging politically correct morons...

yes it's illegal, and yes it sucks... basically any mods done to your car from stock is technically illegal out here. Just really depends on "who you know" to get around certain things...

I see your in Gilroy... I graduated HS from Morgan Hill back in '00.... small world!

In Cali, I basically see three options;

1: Put longtubes and cats so you can pass the sniffer and find a shop that dont care about the visual

2: Put longtubes and just bolt the stock system back on when the smog test time comes
or. . .

3: Find a shop that'll pass you when you dish out some dough. (this is basically what i've done with any car that is old and has the check engine light on)

There's always a way around the system. . . .

No they aren't, they are illegal in all 50 states by federal law. You are just lucky enough to not get checked for them.

Here is a database of every Executive Order (the number you need to LEGALLY pass inspection for smog in california) issued by the California gov't. Having an EO means you have complied with rigorous testing required by govt, and all test results and inspections haver meet or exceeded their standards and you are free to have these on your car! The link i gave only leads to the exhaust modification page and there are long tubed a plenty on there, including y pipes. Of course the smog legal parts are going to be more expensive, but thats because they have to pay out the *** for that testing!

FYI the "longtubes a plenty" you are referring to ONLY applies to 65' and older CA cars and 67' and older federally controlled cars. Longtubes move the cats and are illegal on all other cars in the entire 50 states. Sucks huh?

No emissions test here! Guess that makes the score:

Nebraska: 1
California: 239753645791786255

And so the gap narrows...
