Fan & Thermostat Question.. Hey guys, this is my first post. Well I purchased a 2000 Firebird Formula about a month ago it has 50k miles and runs/looks mint and is bone stock. I'm doing ALL basic maintenance first (fluids/filters) and then im moving onto cooling. I need advice on a transmission cooler... which one is best, and how big should I go? Also, I'm not sure if the thermostat is 180 or 190. Also I need to know the temp. at which my cooling fans turn on.

Stock fan settings are Fan 1 on at 226* and fan 2 on at 234*.
As for the tranny cooler, bigger is better. Go with the biggest one you can fit. I personally have a 24000 GVW derale cooler and am upgrading to a larger one with a big *** fan

Nice. thanks for the fast reply. I think I already know the tranny cooler I wanna get. I want the fans to kick in sooner than that... but I don't wanna buy an expensive programmer. Is there a switch wired to the block or something? That's how the setup was on my 87 trans am. I changed the fan switch on the block itself.... it was cheap, easy, and it worked well. Why cant I find something like that for the ls1? ohh and I think my thermostat is a 180 but I'm still not sure.

Fan settings can only be changed via custom tuning on these cars. That 3rd gen fan switch mod won't work here.
The stock t-stat for all LS1s is an 86°C (187°F) unit, so unless somebody changed it that's what you have.
The B&M trans coolers are my personal favorite. Very strong design, and high quality construction. That would be my recommendation. The 16k GVW unit is plenty big for a stock car, but try for the 19k or 24k if you plan on higher shift points, a big stall, and lots of horsepower.

For a stock car I wouldn't call it a requirement, but it's certainly a good idea and will extend the life of your trans.
