Default Someone explain torque converter, stall, to me...

Go...
Mainly after reading about everyone's car they get a cam and a stall? Something like stall @ 2800 or 3200. I don't get it, don't see any threads about it either.

It's talking about how much you can rev the engine with it in drive while holding the brakes before it finally starts spinning the tires. Like my stock converter only lets me rev to 1700 before the tires start spinning. A 3000 stall should let you rev all the way to 3000 before the tires will break loose. Hope that helps. Maybe someone else can explain a little better.

Yup, that about covers it. . . . It allows the torque not be transfered untill a certain RPM is reached.

Cam and stall are often talked about together because they work together when drag racing. The stall is just another name for torque converter, doesn't let power transfer to the wheels until a set RPM. A 3000 stall transfers power to the wheels at 3000 RPM's. The cam's power band is important to consider. Some huge cams are only good from 3500 to 7000 RPM's which is not a lot of low end. If your cams are giving you good power from 2500-6500, then pick a stall OVER 2500. This assures when you come off the line, you will immediately be in your cam's power band.

there seems to be a lot of mis information in this thread. a stall convertor just changes the point where vortex flow becomes rotary flow. the stall speed is simply where the covertor hits max tq multiplication. the convertor will transfer power to the wheels below the stall speed, it will just multiply the tq less than a convertor with a lower stall speed.

a convertor that raises the stall speed will multiply the tq in that range of RPM. if your cam just starts to come on at 3k rpm, you dont want a 3k stall. you want something that hits max TQ multiplication right in the middle of your power band. general rule of thumb is 1200 below engines max TQ

FYI: A 3000 stall will not footbrake to 3000 rpm. To reach a converter's max stall speed while not moving, a transbrake is required.

However, when you go WOT, the car will shoot straight to the max stall speed if you are under it in the RPM range.

Correct. There is a common misconception that a given stall speed will allow the driver to footbrake to the advertised stall rpm. This is not the case, except with a transbrake.

Well gearing affects stalls too but on a 3.23 geared car like mine I would say anything from stock to a low 230's cam. I had the stall in my car before the H/C/I went on and it really picked it up...
