What's the best way to get road tar off without damaging the paint?

WD-40 or rubbing alcohol.

Yeah, WD-40 will do the trick and is easy on your paint and trim. But there are specific cleaners available at your auto parts store - one that comes to mind is made by GUNK and called 'Bug N Tar Remover'.

I've used WD-40 but I like Turtle Bug & Tar remover, this stuff really works great plus it leaves a shine on you car.
