Default Solarwing Rear Window Deflector For Firebirds and Camaros

Picture, part number, price and describtion is in the link at the bottom. If anyone has pictures of that installed, could you please post your pictures up (preferably on a Trans Am because that what I have ). The Picture that they provide does not show the overall appearance of the car with that installed. Im looking for better angles here if you know what i mean.

Thank you

They fall off at speeds of 80+

I personally don't like it either. Plus it probably worsens the aerodynamics of the car.

Anyone remember the slats you would see on the rear window of just about every 3rd gen Camaro? I like those but... I saw one of those on a 4th gen Firebird up in Maine once and it didn't look nearly as well.

in the description they have they mention that it improves aerodynamics? it would be super helpful if someone posted a pic to let me know how it would look like

I saw an LT1 T/A with one of these at a grocery store one day, and it made me sick to my stomach.

Sorry, didn't take a pic of it.

From my understanding of aerodynamics, you want your airflow to converge behind your car as you progress. Basically forming a tear drop shape. The round part up front and the point at the rear. This add-on lip would prevent this scenario. There would be inclreased turbulence behind the device. More air would be deflected upward.

A wing on the rear of a car cuts through this converging air in a manner that produces downforce. However this creates drag / worse aerodynamics. Removing the wing or decreasing the downforce would increase the top speed, but the car would be more difficult to control at that speed.

If anyone out there knows more about aerodynamics and found something I said to be wrong, please correct me.

VIP, for the beginning i agree, but for the latter, i believe its a yes and a no...

W/ the wing/spoiler, it does help create downforce, but as far as worsening aerodynamics, im not sure. I believe w/ aero testing, you can actually gain better air flow w/ the right angle wing/spoiler, then just strapping a top fuel style, ricer wing up.

But, if you designed the wing to work like that of a jet, the aerodynamics would probably be better, and then maybe some of those cars you see on the highway would finally get to be fast

I own one of these. It didn't fall off when I hit 80MPH, but it did fall off after about a year of use. I think it actually looks pretty good, particularly if you have an SS spoiler. The curve there matches the curving lip of the SS spoiler very well. Just my $.02

Ling_650vette,
Thanks for the reply.

From my understanding, a wing is an appendage of the car that cuts thought the air. This is also increase in surface area that has to be pushed though the air. The more surface area, the more drag / worse aerodynamics. Ex: A 4th gen F-body is more aerodynamic than a 1957 Chevy Bel-Air (although the latter is better looking IMO). The nose of the Bel-Air is larger and catches more air. Putting a large wing on the F-body would have a similar effect. A few years ago one of the major auto mags (MotorTrend/Car and Driver/Road and Track) tested the same Mustang with and without its wing. It gained a few mph in top speed with out the wing but was more stable with the wing.

As to the second part of your post:
The aerodynamic pricinples use in Airplane wings is the same as that used in Automotive wings. Turn an airplane wing upside-down and you have an automotive wing and visa-versa. Granted the dont look the same for the most part, but thats the idea.

It will hurt the aerodynamics of the car.
