Default Do I need cutouts

2000 ws6 all stock internals. Looking to to dual magnaflow exhaust. I picked up some lsextreme headers (ebay headers) and a magnaflow x pipe, and I am getting the rest of my exhaust pieced together now.

Odviously with the headers and flowing exhaust the car will sound much better and louder. But will performance be enhanced by adding cutouts or will it just get alot louder?

I know it boils down to preference, but I am thinking the $300 saved on cutouts could be used towards a intake or whatnot.

I would appreciate some opinions on the this

The performance gains are not gonna be very much. It will just be louder than hell. I would say you should definitely use the money on other mods

Yea price for electric cutouts is a bit steep IMO. But if you get them installed before your cats, if you are running cats, there is a little gain to be had.

just thought id say something positive about the cutouts..ive got them on my 70 duster with a 408..i love them! i took the car to a local dyno day and ran it with them open and closed (closed exhaust is headers to 2" pipe and generic aftermarket performance exhaust). I gained 10hp with them open; of course a well designed full exhaust would see less of a deviation. I also like to have a little fun on a bad day by setting 3-5 car alarms off in a parking garage then leaving in complete silence..

i think in your case, you have a very poor exhaust on an engine that likes to breathe. if you went with 3 inch exhaust, you probably wouldnt see much than 2-3HP gain.

I completely agree-hence why i said "a well designed full exhaust would see less of a deviation" I didnt fully read knightryda01's situation i guess; i thought it was purchase 'expensive' high flow mufflers or cutouts. ..to get the most hp out of you dollar, yes i would spend it on something else, maybe throttle body, or save for something bigger, its up to you..

opps haha..my bad, but anyways just adding another point after thinking for a bit more, i would save up the money to do a cam swap. I dont know LS engines too well but i dont believe the intake manifold itself is that restrictive is it?

Well I think it all depends what you want to do with your car if your going to take it out to the track all the time then yes......

But if it's just going to be just BS around town then not really but that's just my .02 I don't have any but I do wish I would have got some.....

I've been looking at cutouts for a long time, and i've read a lot of posts about them here on ls1tech. Most people report a 2-10hp gain with cut-out open. Obviously this all varies due to what exhaust you have, so if 2-10hp is worth $300, then go for it. Chances are though, the money is better off spent elsewhere.

or you could just get 2 manual cutouts for like 36 dollars a piece. Not as cool as an electric cutout but it takes me less than a minute to either open or close my cheap-o manual flowtech cutout. I dont have to crawl under the car I can reach it just fine laying next to the car

and the cool thing about the manual ones, if you get them now, you can add the electric butterflys later on down the road.

It will definately come down to how restrictive you mufflers are.

I have one in the I-pipe on my car, and with a Flowmaster 80 series () I picked up 10-15hp and 10-15 lb-ft from basically 3000rpm up on back to back runs closed vs open.

A buddy of mine with a GMMG catb-back has one and he didn't pick up anything noticeable.

I think with TD's you won't notice a lot of difference open vs closed in terms of power. If you want to pick up so more go, I'd put the money elsewhere.
