Arrow ********VIDEO******** Clutch Sqeal

So, I've talked to a few people and they say that "puck" designed clutches sqeal or make noise by nature... nobody has heard my car, and they just say this by what I describe to them. So I finally got a video together tonight when I was leaving my work (I work graveyards). Started the car up from cold, let it warm up for about 5-10 minutes then hit record on the video camera...

So guys tell me if this is normal or not... the car seems to perform fine and the clutch works fine as well. I have no issues really, except for this loud *** annoying noise coming from feathering engagement into first gear... It's REALLY EMBARRASSING!!!

YEP! That's almost exactly what mine sounds like except mines a bit higher pitch but it just may be the video. Yours actually has kinda like a rustier sound to it

I have a SPEC V in my Trans Am, and that noise you have is nothing, mine sounds like a stuck pig underneath the car!

BUT I've learned to just take off quick and once it gets warmed up, it seems to go away...and by warmed up it is usually after passes down the track, it doesn't see much normal driving.

But I'm going to an auto now for the track, so no more Mr. Pig

yea mine seems to stay for a while after it's warmed up even, although less apparent... don't let the volume level of the sqeal from the video fool you. That's the sqeal I could get out of it at "this" particular point when making the video, but much of the time it's a lot louder...

How many miles have you put on it? It sounds like you're slipping it which you can't do when you're breaking in a puck clutch. My spec 4 is bad the way i have to take off is just give it gas and dump it there is no smooth taking off

it's got like 8,000 miles on it... well beyond break in. To be honest the noise didn't start till about 2000 miles ago. I'm feathering it on purpose in this video to create the noise.

My Spec 3+ has a similar sound but it only really happens backing into the garage. Its not even loud enough to capture on video.

I think its a normal sound as a result of the friction material being used. Cant see any way of fixing it outside a different disk with different friction material.

what is the disc/puc material made of?

kevlar will glaze quickly on street driving.

it 'could" be worn down to rivet causing source of noise..

you need to pull it to confirm...unfortunately.

My guess is its glazed over, mine does this as well. It needs to be taken to the track and dumped a few times to knock it off, after that it should quiet down.

Exactly what I did and it fixed most of the noise with my textralia. Go do some high rpm clutch dumps on slicks. You also seem to be slipping it at low rpm with not much gas, which when I did that, just made my noise even worse. Beat on the clutch some and stop bein so nice to it, its made to be raced not driven like a cadillac. Sounds like you're slipping it barely above idle, try slipping it at around 1400rpm and it might help, after you abuse it a little bit that is.

My Monster level 3 did something similar to that after driving it around town for a while. Just beat on it like everyone else said. Should clear it up.

Yeah mine sound simular to the video. Got about 10-11k miles on it now and the noise started a long time ago but has gotten slightly quieter with the warmer weather. I gotta slip the clutch a lot with the aluminum fw to get it to creep around. Sucks cause its so embarassing at times cause it can get pretty damn loud.

My Spec 3+ does that but it only has about 400 miles on it and of those about 100 stop and go miles. It's getting better and does it less each time I drive the car. Once the clutch is completely broken in, if it still does it, I'll try the beat on it approach.

My last clutch used to make that noise, but that was right before it took a dump on me...

my Cartek clutch makes that noise from time to time. i'm not worried about it though as i'm putting a Monster Stage 3 in the car in a couple weeks. i've had enough of the Cartek's disengagement issues.
