Just picked up a 2000 Trans Am M6 on new years day and stopped by my friend’s house today to show it off. He has a 03 WRX Sedan, and of course, after letting him drive it he wanted to race. So we both merged onto I280 line up next to each other at about 65mph we both nail it and by 115 or so I had pulled about 15 cars lengths. Man I love the LS1 torque. We raced again back the other way to his house, same out come I pull about a car length every few seconds on him. He did not expect to win but I think he was surprised how much he was smoked by.

What do you mean we got no torque? I usually light my tires from a 10 mph roll for a few feet. At work I wanted to show a coworker the power of an LS1 and burned them for 50 feet, at which time I started fishtailing and backed off. That takes torque baby!!! :D

Sarcasm aside, though our cars make good torque numbers, the contrast in torque to horsepower is a bit different than the days of say, an L98. My friend's '89 Iroc was good for 240hp@4400 345tq@3200. That car would make an instant imprint of your back into the seat when the throttle was dropped.
So, experiencially, our cars seem to be lacking in the torque department. That's all.

Coming from a 600cc sport bike background and having v6 cars the LS1 has allot of torque. It is relative though. Btw, how have people been fairing against STI's with Ls1 cars?

Yeah, those high 90 mph trap speed cars should hold right with a car that traps 105.

I guess my friend could have backed off earlier than i did? But I know when he was in front and we both nailed it i was pulling a car lenght every 2-3 seconds or so on him from 45-100

LS1 is developing about 340 lb ft of tq. That is near the 3rd gen's 345. I have driven most gens and the LS1 is the best by far.

Nice kill. I pulled 1-2 cars on WRXs in my old Headswapped GT that trapped 99, from a stop btw. An LS1 would be sad from a roll heh.

Experientially is the word you're looking for.

I still don't consider my car "torquey" or fast for that matter. I want to take a ride in my friends 7.1x second car. I wonder if that'll feel fast. Ten second cars just don't impress me. I want a car with turbo Hyabusa acceleration.

nice, mine'll roast them any time I like.
just flip that arm switch and watch the car go sideways ;)

As for the STI, I am kinda leery about those... I have a friend at work that has one and he smoked a Charged 5.0 (but I believe the 5.0 needed tuning). I think I could take one, but I would be really embarrassed the next day at work if I was whopped.

That's cool. I can't.....but I'm only making 330 rwhp vs 600. The nitrous should raise that to 40 mph roast or so.

I cannot roast my tires unless I am on shitty pavement. Granted it has been raining allot here and the streets when dry are clean. Nevertheless, I was hoping I would be able to smoke the tires just by nailing it in first. So far, I have only been able to bark the 1-2 shift pretty consistently. I guess I need some bald tires or some mods to get there.

WECIV
01-09-2004, 05:54 PM
Easy Rider, your car must be jacked if it will not bark 'em. Mine will smoke 'em with the traction control on.

I test drove alot of Trans Ams before i bought mine and non of them would spin the tires in first under full throttle that includes 2 less than 10k mile 02 model ta's I drove. So I didn't think anything of it. of course i am talking about driving staight and a fully engaged clutch prior to WOT.

WECIV
01-09-2004, 10:12 PM
Easy Rider, if you jam on the gas from a start they will spin, I promise.

easy_rider
01-09-2004, 10:29 PM
Ok I'll have to jam down WOT from a complete stop then.

WECIV
01-10-2004, 11:53 PM
I was just saying that if all else fails, step on it from a stop. Mine will do it from more than a stop, but I was just giving you a last ditch idea, sorry if it sounded dumb.

SOmeone asked how STi's fare against LS1's. Well to start off, I am new to this board and should have my WS6 by April (have wanted one since they were redesigned for 98) But one of my good friends has a 99 SS. A friend of his has a STi (2003, i think). Both bone stock. They raced from about 15-20mph. It was door to door, I mean NOBODY was even inching, but as soon as the SS hit 4th (about 115 mph), it was bye-bye for the ole import :usa: And what makes it an even better kill is that the STi owner was talking smack before the race!!! lol

Vendetta

Spinning the tires? What's that? ;)

Skarecrow
01-11-2004, 12:36 AM
If you want to spin tires, it's incredibly easy. Just raise the psi to 40 or so, or lower it to about 15. Either way, you'll spin nicely just blippin the throttle. heh.

I can spin from a stop at half throttle. It's hard to spin them, or even really chirp them, past about 10 or 15 mph or so though. I dunno if the tires are sticky, or if I'm somehow down on power or what.

WECIV
01-11-2004, 02:24 PM
I try not to spin mine, but you know how that LS1 power is, it just sneaks up on you...

Ok so I tried from a complete stop and nailed it aggressively. And they spun all the way through first, laid about a 20-30 foot patch. Love the posi traction laying two darkies. That was fun!!

I knew your car had it in it. Dont worry, slap in a cam and some heads, and it will blow your mind on what it could do!!
