Default Your opinion on relocating the axle bearing

I have been having a humming noise from the rear end for quite some time and I am pretty sure I have it narrowed down to the left rear axle bearing. I have heard from quite a few that I can relocate the bearing on another part of the axle if its pitted.

Any views on this? I have heard good things and bad things of doing it. Any suggestions would be great. I am going to be pulling the axle tomorrow and find out if that is the issue.

Thanks!!!

I went with a used axle and the regular style bearing. You can pick up a used one for a decent price, probably because people upgrade to better axles. Try posting in your local/regional room that you are looking for one.

Here's an example of a used axle for sale in RI. I don't know the guy, don't know if the part is in good shape. But the price is good:
