I decided to take my 02 Z28 to the track for the first time tonight. It is my DD and it has just under 80k miles. It has Slp loudmouth, UD Crank Pulley, and Msd wires. It is a M6 also.

I never have a problem missing a gear but I guess because it was my first time I couldnt seem to nail 3rd. I missed completley into 5th the first run.
Second Run It hestitated to go into 3rd, and the 3rd run I took my time to make sure I didnt miss it. Do you think a aftermarket shifter would help? I have the stock t56 shifter with the bulky ball knob

I am on previous owner supplied 225/45-18's, I have stock wheels with no tires, I think when it is time I will buy tires for the stock wheels so I can get a wider tire. I dont have a lot of money, and this is my DD so I dont want to do any real hard launches and break my rear. but I just really didnt expect 14's...

Heres my crappy 1st run ( I AM 355)

Yes, get an aftermarket shifter....I like the Pro 5.0, it will make a huge difference.

Yes a shifter will help but the main thing is practice your launches and shifts. Its hard to get a good 60' w/radials and an M6 but can be improved upon..
Pro 50 (mechanical feel) or B&M ripper (smooth)

shifter, tires, and PRACTICE!!!

also you shouldnt be going into fifth, so you're def short shifting

My guess is you need the drill mod... if I shift too fast I can't hit 3rd period. I normally have to delay my 2 to 3 shift slightly to get it to work.

Something is very strange... where was this at? Something is telling me this is a high altitude track or something is wrong with the car... your MPH is very low.

You gotta get that 60' down. Don't worry about the rear end until you start launching on slicks and put a ring gear with thinner teeth in there. Slip the clutch a little and be agressive with the throttle. Even on 225s you should be able to pull an easy 2.0.

dont feel bad man. last night was my first time at the strip and my best was a 14 flat. i could only make 2 passes tho on the night (big lines) but im going back for sure to work on my launchs. my 60' times were around 2.3 :(

As mentioned, practice will ultimately help out more than throwing a bunch of mods at it. But the mph does seem a little low. Check all normal maint. items like plugs, filter (air and fuel), etc.

EDIT: DUH!

Honestly... At my local track (1/8) that is what most stock 6 speeds run... Definitely need traction and practice launching but it is about on par for first trip to the track.

I think he means he shifted to 5th instead of 3rd guys.

Sunday was my first time to the track and I found out A. I need drag radials B. adjustable torque arm and C. MORE TRACK TIME LOL. I am also a M6 and I ran a best of 13.6 at 107 with a shitty 2.3 60 ft. I could not get it to hook off the line for anything and my 1-2 and 2-3 shifts spun real hard also. As for you trapping 100 you might be granny shifting and not slaming the gears fast enough you should definitely get that after market shifter it will make your 2-3 shift smoother and much faster. I also run 3rd to the finish line where im at about 6300RPM. Hope this helps and good luck.

i dont mean to be a dick but a 14 is giving f-bodys a bad name :( time for some drag radials and a shifter and a lid if you dont have one

A little seat time at the track and practicing your launch will really help the times. You'll be amazed by what knocking that 60 foot time down to a 1.8 - 1.9 will do for you!

As for the shifters, I upgraded to a Pro 5.0 -- love it. It has a very firm, positive feeling to it -- you're either in gear or out (isn't slushy). The greatest benefit is that the 2-3 shift is almost linear -- meaning that you're pushing the shifter in a straight line for the shift rather than an up-over-up some more motion.

Look into a Tick MC if you're having troubles with your shifts. That plus a pro 5.0 and it will feel like a completely different car. Also, 225/18's? Get yourself some real wheels and tires and the launch will be MUCH easier

^^ LOL

225s are crazy for that car...I would definitely get a different tire on the car and a shifter....
