Default stipped out crank snout

got a friend that is working on a 86 firebird v6 car. he put a 84 suburban v8 in it, 350. we've been messing with it for a few years and now the crank snout is stripped out.

he just doesent know what to do, can we fix this in the car or does the motor have to come out? he asked a machine shop and they said he might be able to drill it and tap it but i dont know if there is room in a third gen bird to do that.

we have the radiator out, it seems silly that gm would use a 7/16 bolt for the harmonic balancer.

Gm has been using a 7/16 bolt on all of their small blocks since they first started making htem. I would Heli-coil it. I have heard of people putting a 1/2 bolt in there, but I wouldnt' do it just b/c if someone else worked on it at a later date, they could screw it up even more.

Oh yea, this is why you use a harmaonic damper installer tool. Don't ever use the bolt to try to get the H.D. back on.
