Default What is the 'speed' in speed density?

I have a question about HP tuners speed density OS. How does the ECU determine 'speed'? Does it use RPM and other engine sensors, do does it truly use speed, as in tire speed (MPH)?

The reason I ask is because I am thinking of dropping a LS based motor and running SD, except, I will not have any 'speed' sensors unless I put a wheel on the crank or something.
