Default Can I wetsand and polish my crappy stock wheels?

I have a 94 Formula and I have some crappy looking 5 star wheels. They are not polished aluminum...just the dull grey. The rears look fine but my front wheels are damaged. They clear is coming off on them in quite a few spots. Would wet sanding and polishing help them at all? Is there any thing I can do to help them appearance wise?

If the clear is coming off wetsanding will not fix it you just need to repaint them. I painted mine with wheel paint that I got from autozone. Just make sure to get all off the flaking paint off.

Not that I know of other then taking it to a shop that repairs rims. If its not too bad you could use a this layer of bondo and sand it to blend with the lip and then paint it

Nah not worth it on my stock wheels. I just thought, if there was a easy way to clean them up some and paint them to look decent again for a while until I can afford to get some nice wheels, then that would be cool...

Sorry OP, didn't mean to hijack, just gave me the idea when I saw your thread.

Go buy some aircraft stripper from an Auto store. Spray all the wheels down (of the car preferably) and it'll strip your clear coat off. Then polish the living hell out of the wheels so they'll get shiny again. Just search "Aircraft stripper" on here, you'll see a bunch of threads.

Give us pics of the car and we can tell you how they would look in black.

You'll just have to keep up on them and use some wheel polish every time you wash the car or so. Nothing else should happen

Ok...So I'm pretty set on doing what it said in the link as I'm off all week. Do you think I could just clear coat it after I polish them up? Would that look good and last? I pretty much have to coat them as it's my DD and I will be driving in the snow.

yep,, you just need to strip off the clear coat first. Its alot of work to strip, sand, and polish,,, so if your not up for it,, get some wheel paint,, sand, prime, paint them,, and for that extra shine clear coat them.

Just use the aircraft stripper and then polish. It's not hard at all. It'll last just as long as any other polished piece would.

I suppose you can clear coat them.. it might not come out as a flawless smooth finish though. Nothing's going to happen to the wheels now that couldn't happen before. Except them getting dull from not polishing them every once in a while.

the clear is mostly put on to protect it against corrosion,, on cars that are driven in lots of salt in winters,,, if you got them in salt (without clear) and let them sit for a a few months without cleaning them theyd start to pit and stain. If your car isnt driven in those kinds of conditions,, a quick polish every month or 2 keeps them looling like new. The clear will also dull up the shine a tad and is more for ppl who just like to wash there car and thats it.
I always get rid of clear,, all it does is crack later and look like crap,,, worse then the pitting its protecting.

when you prime them use a self-etching primer...you'll need that for best results for an aluminum wheel...it's available at walmart or any auto parts store...a little more expensive, but that's what you need if you plan on painting them

I tried to strip and polish one of my wheels today....It was a horrible experience. I'm still not done. There was a coat of clear, a coat of grey/silver paint, and a coat of primer. I thought it was just a clear coat? I guess you live and learn. Seems like I ruined the wheel. Guess it's an excuse to get new wheels.
