BTW, any more info on the rattle, like what it sounds like, etc?

I knew it would be useless, but they proved it. To them it sounds like it's on the right side, in the lifter/cam area. Haven't picked it up yet. Anything else I should push them for while it's there? If I have enough daylight I can pull that valve cover tonight after work but short of being able to determine something with the lifters based upon the behavior of the pushrod, I don't see how it'll benefit... unless it's really in the top end.

Hey Jim long time since I've talked to you hope everything is good. That sounds exactly like my car did when I had a few bent pushrods. I would say pull the valvecovers and rockers and check all the pushrods before you pull the heads. If you need any help let me know. Will work for beer

Hey Will! I'd be surprised if any of my 3/8" Manton pushrods were bent. It would however be undesirable if one of the ends of the 3-piece pushrods came off. Didnt get to the dealer in time to pickup the car tonight, maybe I'll just try to leave it there until Wednesday, when I'm scheduled to let Chris rip open the oil filter with his bare hands
I'm already looking at shortblock prices, doesn't look like they change much from year to year.

Might be worth an oil change just to be sure none of
the needles are down in the pan. Seen an ugly pic off
a local board, where some dude lost half a lifter wheel
and needle bearings there too. Chewed up his cam real
good. Just pulling covers and checking for finger-tight
on the pushrods would be sensible & easy enough.
I've had a loose plug wire make enough spark noise
that I thought it was a lifter. But you'd feel that, I
expect.

Chris cut open the oil filter and found glitter in the oil, and also a lot of fine steel shavings. Put on a cheap filter, topped off the oil and drove it home. I can feel something wrong with it physically now, but the oil pressure is still OK. Th best way I can describe it is that it seems like it regularly surges without the RPM's changing.
Chris has a partial solution I may take advantage of, still trying to make a decision on where to go from here. Don't like the idea of long downtime waiting for the machine shop, that machining cost could go towards a new block. But I'll be really pissed off if I need to cancel my vacation with my daughter to Italy in August because of this f'ing car expense. I have a co-worker who lives in my complex, and it sounds like we'll be able to work out a car pooling deal for work. Neighbors are saying do whatever I can to keep the vacation, but they aren't tossing money at me either LOL.
I've pondered cutting my losses on this car in past years...maybe selling the rolling chassis without the motor and getting into something low maintenance is the proper solution.
