Default Whats the best LT1 T56 I can buy?

Hi all

Im building a little project car and I need a short shaft T56. There are few on eBay but all very expensive.
I have access to wrecked insurance cars so I was thinking of buying ***** wrecked car but I am not sure what cars did they come in.

Also I've read that some of the T56s are made in Germany and are better than ones made in Mexico. How do I make sure I get the better one.

Thanks

Greg

LT1 F-body vehicles.. 1993 -> 1997 (The 93's have wider ratio gears in the T56, the rest are all close ratio)

That is actually only partially true, there were two M6 trans avaliable for 93' (M28 and M29) M28 is the wide ratio, while M29 is the close ratio and its actually closer than the 94-97 cars. I would say an M29 style gearing would be your best bet, It works great in my car.

Relative to the MM6, both the M28 and M29 are wide ratio gear sets..

94-97 units are the most common and are all the same. If you buy a used one, you are taking a chance. Buying a rebuilt one with upgrades will cost you more up front but will probably be cheaper in the long run.

I stand corrected, I went back and referred to my chart and the M29 ratios are wider than the 94-up ratios. For some reason I was thinking otherwise.

GR - M28 -- M29 -- 94+
1 -- 3.36 -- 2.97 -- 2.66
2 -- 2.07 -- 2.07 -- 1.78
3 -- 1.35 -- 1.43 -- 1.30
4 -- 1.00 -- 1.00 -- 1.00
5 -- 0.80 -- 0.80 -- 0.74
6 -- 0.62 -- 0.62 -- 0.50

I'd want a 1993 M29 unit with .56 sixth, SSR tailhousing, counter and output shaft per Mike's recent research.

In all seriousness, I'd look at gear ratios and what the powertrain was making to see if I wanted to stick with MM6 or what.

That's a Z51 donor trans SSR hybrid, but abet still an LSx setup... ;-)
