Default Oil Pickup tube Question

So I paid a shop to shorten/reweld my oil pickup tube (did a crappy job BTW lol) only to find out my measurement was wrong. I really need about another 1/2" taken out.

I was curious if the oil pickup tube NEEDS the big mushroom head at the bottom, or if I could just stick the tube down in the pan with some mesh covering the end?

I mean I know it will "work" without the mushroom head, but what is it really there for? Does it really function better than just the bare tube stuck down in the oil pan?

you need to maintain clearance between pickup and bottom of pan. not sure what ls eng. r, but bbc was always 3/8 if i remember correctly.

The big mushroom is there to give the mesh more surface area. If you just cut it off and put a piece of mesh over the end of the tube it might become a restriction.

+1 How would you secure the mesh on the end of tube anyway? I wouldn't trust just any method, I'd be worried about vibrations. Not sure what the clearance is on the LS motors, we used to set up 1st gen smallblocks with 3/8".

I'm not real sure. It's just I can't find a shop that will weld the tube back up for me. The shop I did find that could do it the first time (a "tuner" shop) did a terrible job and the welds were crappy and brittle. I don't want to use them again, but I can't find anyone else in my area to touch it.

Try a good machine/welding shop rather than an automotive shop. There should be one of those around. Where are you located?

I'm in Dallas. I know there must be 1000 places here that can do what I need, but I can't seem to find them. The places I call all seem unsure whether or not they can do it. They all want to look at the piece, which I understand to a degree, but I don't have a lot of time to be able to drive around in the HOPE that a shop MAY be able to weld it up for me.

I'm in Dallas too. PM me or email and we can get together. My TIG machine is in the shop for repairs right now but as soon as I get it back I can do it for you.
