Default Who can Identify this part/piece

I have a friend that has been dealing with some issues with his car after another person worked on it. The car has an intermittent tick/knock, the car will be running fine and out of nowhere it would start ticking/knocking then it would disappear. The previous person that worked on the car left a head bolt loose, I replaced the head gaskets and while I had the heads off I replaced the lifters.

When I got the car back together is ran great, no issues... When the friend came and got the car it started making the knocking noise on his way home. He decided to have a thicker weight oil put in the car so he put 20/50 in it. The tech that changed the oil found this piece of metal on the magnet:

For the life of me I can not place where this piece of metal can came from. Over the last 4-5 months the motor has been swapped, the head gaskets have been changed 3 time...

Now that he went to a thicker oil it has not make the ticking/knocking noise. Tonight I pulled off all the rockers and did not find anything wrong with them. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That's part of a valve spring.

It could be but the radius is about same as a wrist-pin on a piston. I think the valve spring is a little bigger...

Looks just like my broken valve spring. The ticking was very faint but there.

He took the part with him, I do see where it could be the bottom of a spring.

Ok, put it this way, which is easier to check, a broken valve spring or a wrist pin? Bet it's a tip from the bottom of one of your valves, easy to check at this point though.

If anything this is from an old stock spring, he has had duel extremes on the car. When I changed the head gaskets on the car he switched heads, the duel extremes have been on the motor for a while

Yeah he called and sent me pictures too Chad, but yours is a better picture. And if I has to guess I would think it was one of the smaller inner springs and not the larger outer coil. I told him to change the rockers and see what happened as I couldn't find anything wrong with them myself, but as much stuff that has been replaced on it and as many people have worked on the car/motor it was just an idea if someone has a set of stockers to try on it etc...GL.

Valvespring. I have not seen a wristpin that looks anything like that...... I would recommend changing all of the valvesprings in the car and while you're at it, change the valvestem seals. If you have a broken one, more than likely, you'll have more to come. Unless that valve hit a piston......

I looked at all the rockers last night and I could not find any problem with them. I have another set of stock rockers we was going to put on but his was in better condition. Mine looked like they came off a 110k car that only had the oil changed twice. LOL
