Default 17's or 18's Is there a big difference??

i had a 95 v6 camaro with some 18's and they were the same height as the stock rims and tries so there shouldnt be a big performance diference in 17's and 18's right?

But with tires today, they make sidewalls pretty damn stiff. I have 18's on my 02 SS and it handles great. I'm running 275/35/18 Kumho tires. Too. I'm sure someone can help you with more specifics better than I though... But mostly i'm sure it would really depend on overall rim weight, and what rate tires you went with.

The difference is that with 18's you cant buy Nittos <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

With 17's you can.

770boy your line measured 3/4" on my screen <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

slightly rougher ride, slightly better carving with correct tires and possibly more weight cuz of the extra wheel.

imop 18's are just a scoch too big for our cars after comparing 17's and 18's often to decide on my wheels.

I beg to differ...
I know my 18's are just as light, if not lighter than 17" in Torq Thrusts.. it's just a matter of what wheel you pick. And are you sure they don't make Nitto's to fit 18's. ???? I think they do.
I think Steve2000SS has nitto's on his 18" Z06's if i'm not mistaken.

I'd check out the wheel thread that's been going on this board, and check out the differences in appearance between 17's and 18's and even 19's.

Good luck!

With a 17 inch rim you have more side wall, that means that the side wall can wrinkle moreand it gives you a better balance or a good handleing tire and a good straight line traction. Now with the 18 inch you have less side wall that means that the side wall cant wrinkle as much so your straight line traction wont be as good, but then on the other hand the less side wall means that your handleing will be better casue the less side you have to fold over when your pushing it.

Hope this helps. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

How significant that is depends how important each tenth is to you. And you can go with wider tires and have a bigger selection of tires at a much better price if you go with 17s

As stated before you can get a bigger sidewall with 17s for better traction and most if not all big brake packages only require 17s although you need to make sure of caliper clearences with both 17 and 18s.

The only 18" Nitto drag, according to their website, is a 305/45/18. That is roughly a 28.8" tall tire. I sure as heck wouldnt want a tire that tall.

I have 18" rims on my car and I like how they look. I just dont like that I cant get a nice sticky tire for everyday use. I am currently running the best tire for an 18" rim, the BFG G-Force KD ($350 per tire... huge waste of money), and at the track my best 60' has been a horrid 2.35. On a drag radial it was 1.84 and on an ET street it was 1.65.

basically this is what I understood from this post and please correct me if im wrong.

18s:

1)Less selections of tires out there
2)worse 1/4 mile time. Bad on performance
3)better at cornering
4)bumpier ride
5)very expensive tires ($350). Too much
6)better looking rims
7)I think those tires last less than 17s. Correct me on this one.

Damn. I was thinking about getting 19" Replica Y2K C5 wheels but im starting to change my mind.

One question. Can you have wider tires for 18s than 17s?
