New LS1 Owners - Newbie Tech - any way to tell if it's an actual 383?

i started a thread a while back in another section about a friend who said he had a 383 in an old camaro he was willing to part with for almost nothing...
he also said he'd had it bored .040... which was then told to me that it owuld be a 357, not a 383... is ther ANY way to tell what it is or isnt by just popping the hood?

Short of tearing the motor down. No I do not think you can tell.

you can measure the cyl volume by pooring a fluid "trans fluid if u like" in the camber with the piston at btc. Then measure the amount it took to fill times 8.

You can get a P&G gauge maybe at a local machine shop or race track and pump the motor. It will tell you approximately how big the motor is.
