I have converted my 98 C5 from a M6 to an A4. It's pretty easy to do, and for the most part is a bolt-in. The only tricky part is some of the wiring as the harnesses are different for the M6 vs A4.

I figured it might be, what would be the easiest way to do it? Buy a wrecked auto C5 or just start hunting for all the crap piece by piece?
So what all needs to change besides the obvious?
1) I'm assuming the torque tubes & bell housings are different?
2) Gotta have the tranny cooler + lines?
3) Interior plastic + shifter stuff & brake pedal
4) What all for electronics?

You will need: flexplate, torque tube, trans, converter, front and rear bellhousings, tranny cooling lines, A4 radiator (or external cooler), shifter and cable, brake pedal. No interior plastic needs to be changed. Also the seal plate that goes in between the A4 and differential is different vs the M6 plate.
Your PCM will need to be reflashed to run the A4.
The wiring is a little tricky but do-able. See the link below to glean some tips as there are differences in the wiring harnesses from year to year. What I did was to take a junk A4 wiring harness and strip it down to just the wires that I need. I used this as an add-on wiring harness that interfaces between the PCM and A4. It also has other wires in it like the reverse lights, Park/Neutral interlock. In this manner, I didn't have to swap out any wiring harnesses, rather I just added wires to run the A4.

harness would be the only tricky part.. or just go th400
How would you fit a TH400 in a C5? Last I checked they didnt make very many transaxles, esp not TH400s. I doubt he'd be interested in re-engineering the entire chassis for a simple trans swap

lol, the only reason i'm considering this idea is as my car is leaning more and more towards being a dedicated car to dragracing i figure someday that may happen to get rid of any "off the gas to shift" times and i don't want to powershift this car on spray if fear of missing a shift and then hitting the rev limiter on the spray.
I dunno, it was just a feeler to see if it was even possible. But right now i do like rippin the gears for sure!
