Default Diagnosis HELP!

Fellas,

As many of you know, I am the new, proud owner of an 05 V. In the last week I have noticed the appearance of a weird grinding noise and I need help from the pros in diagnosing it.

Only happens occassionally...not a constant sound. Sounds like a wheel bearing going bad, but it isn't (we checked). It varies on the car speed...not the rpm of the motor. Driveshaft or something?!? We also put the car of a lift and tried to reproduce the sound and couldn't do so.

What is throwing me is that after owning the car for a week, this sound has now shown up and is occurring so sporadically that I can't track it down!

Thanks in advance,

LAW

I had a similar problem. When I got my 04 V I heard a faint grinding coming from the back. It wasn't always there but I was occasionally. I turned out to be a bad bearing in the drive shaft (right before the rear diff). I had to replace the whole shaft because the bearing isn't a separate part. $1500 at the dealer. Ouch. I hope you have better luck.

Not exactly sure. I would say around the center console or close thereby.

This is what my mechanic is thinking and I am afraid of. Good news (I guess) is he can get the shaft for 800 bones instead of 1,500.

Change the fluid in your differential.

Are you out of warranty already? I had a similar problem after getting stuck this winter. Luckily it was just my rear bearings.

Considered this also...no difference when the clutch is in or out, so not the culprit.

Like Stageup said, the dif is always a good place to start since it's a known weakness. And if it doesn't solve it, at least you have new fluid in there.

True. Good call.

I will try that and post the results.

Is there a bearing somewhere in in the "middle" of the driveshaft? My mechanic said there appears to be a joint or bearing before the rear end...he thinks that may be the issue.

It appears that the problem squeal is still extremely unpredictable.....it will come and go as it wants. From what I can tell, no difference in driving style, speed, rpm, etc. makes any difference.

Any more input on this?

Well, noise or squeal. Two distinctively different sounds.
Since, you said that it does not make a difference with the clutch in or out, then I would be inspecting the pads & rotors for irregularities. At certain rotational speeds, the rotors/pads can generate a harmonic based on a particular irregularity. Also, how is your parking brake working? Does it release all the way. Good Luck.

I'd say the carrier bearing in the middle of the driveshaft is taking a dump.
