Default MPH down...any ideas?

Hit the track for the first time this past weekend in my new car, and definitely am not all that pleased compared to what most people say the car should run...

First off, 99 A4 Formula, 3.23 rear, only mod is a lid/filter, dyno tuned at 312whp/330wtq a week and a half ago.

Best time was 13.60 @ 102.6x I believe, with a 2.1x 60'. That was my first pass of the day and it didn't get any better from there.

Got my 60' down to a 2.04 but the MPH never hit 102.x again, ranged from 100.x to 101.x, no matter hot or cold. Ran about a dozen times, ET was 13.60-13.76...

Any ideas? Car has 85k on it, and I've only done fluid changes/brakes changes and the lid/filter since I bought it last month.

I thought I should be trapping like 105-108mph or so?....

Thanks in advance...

I ran a 13.1@105 with a 2.1 60' with mods in sig. Your times seem pretty average for a lid only auto. Longtubes/cat back and a tune will wake it up.

Car is tuned, sorry I didn't specify that. I also have LT's/ORY in the garage that I'm waiting to put on, but I have just read/talked to multiple people that have run low 13's at 105-108 stock, or stock with just a tune, cutting similar 60'.

Thanks for your input though.

I don't like your 5700 shift points, what's the reason for that?

What was the DA for your runs?

Try changing plugs, wires, fuel filter.

The guy that tuned my car said power peak power was at like 5400 and so he set the shift points just above that, not sure other than that.

And is DA density altitude? If so I believe it was around 1275 feet in the morning and 1815 feet in the afternoon around my last run?

I dunno, I just googled it and found this website, located my track/day I went...? http://www.dragtimes.com/da-density-...ect+ET+and+MPH

sounds fairly accurate for a lid only, 3700 lb car.

Ok, well it is what it is I guess...just gonna enjoy it now. A bunch of locals were telling me they ran 13.0-13.30s @ 106-108 stock like mine, so maybe they just had freaks.

Just had the car scanned, no knock whatsoever, no misses, or anything to mention, guess the cars running well.

One more question I had was about that website, dragtimes.com, it says to put in your et/trap speed and it will calculate a "corrected" time/speed, what is this? Is it saying that's what my car should run if DA wasn't an issue?

Thanks

Shift points can kill your mph, I've always felt the need for a bump in rpm's when my car was stock.

get those headers on and bump rev limiter to 6300 and shift at 6000.

my stock ls1 was shifting at 6300 with a 6500 rev limit ...full bolt-ons, loved it.

Ok, will do. Will the headers/increased airflow move the powerband up a little or something? I guess I don't see the point in revving higher if you're actual hp/tq is decreasing as you increase revs?

I'll ask my tuner to increase the shift points, what can the motor rev to safe stock? Like is 6500 safe?

The point of a higher shift point is to fall into the power the engine is making. Lets say you peak at 5,700, if you shift then your next gear is making alot less hp at the giving rpm. now if you shift the car at 6,000 then the next gear will fall into a higher hp and higher rpm to get the feel of falling on its face away.

Shift tuning is not done by asking your tuner, its done by going to the track and feeling it out, or just by bumping it up 100-200 rpms at a time and see where you get.

My girlfriends 99 car short shifted bad on the 1-2 shift, like 5600 even on a stock motor this felt bad to me. We had it tuned and I told the guy to bump it all up 200 rpms,.....it feels better now.

on my car I've made about 10 changes to shift timing, its about right now but my car is heads cam stall, etc.

My stock ls1 from 2000 had a 224 cam and ls6 heads, I revved it to 6500 all the time on a 140,000 mile motor, never had a problem. Keep the oil clean and up to level. The only time I saw a ls1 pop was when the guy only had 3 quarts in it...dumbass.

not saying you cannot pop these motors, but they are very tough is taken care of. These motors like to drink oil out of the pcv so make sure to check oil often

Cars tend to run slower in shitty weather, about a tenth for every 1k Feet, humidity also kills times.. your corrected time is in good weather.. so its running where it should, stock shift points come at 6k.. I don't know why yours was lowered, you have a few tenths left there.

Did a tune up on the car last night, plugs/wires/pcv/fuel filter, gonna get a 160tstat this week then hit the dyno again. Also probably going to raise the shift points to 58/5900 as according to my dyno sheet power is still above 300whp at 6k...

Another thing that didn't help is I had a FULL tank of gas when I went to the track, so I'm sure that's another hundred pounds I didn't need, but hopefully next week is better.

Thanks
Matt

Full tank is def. alot of weight , but at the same time never run below 1/4. I try to run at 1/3 tanks. the fuel pumps in any fuel injection motor hates to run dry, if there is more fuel in there 1/4 + then you are not only keeping fuel in the pump, but you are also submerging it entirely, this really helps keep the pump cool, and yes I replace my fuel filter every year, last time i cut it open it was starting to get a tad dirty only after 10,000 miles
