I have the opportunity to get one out of an SS Camaro for a reasonable price. 72,000 miles. Is there anything to look out for? Does this have the LS1 or LS6 intake, seeing as it's the SS car? What would be an ideal upgrade (affordable) to get around 400hp? Thanks for the input!

full bolt ons & a mild cam should get you to 400.

All 2001-2002 LS cars had the LS6 intake manifold. It's the same engine in the base z28 as the ss.

So it sounds like a minimal extra investment will get me a good amount more power? This will be in a daily driver. I'm happy to hear that the intake is what I'd want. I'm thinking a cam with something like 220°/225° @ 0.050" and about 0.550" lift or so will get where I need to be? Any ideas? I still want good driveability and MPG. 1966 Nova wagon is the goal. Will keep the 4l60e as well.

400 crank horsepower is achievable with that cam but not 400rwhp IMO go with a cam in the 230's and you should be above 400rwhp through a 4l60 good luck with the project!

I still am driving this every day and wouldn't mind good gas mileage. I think with a bigger cam it'd be a little tough to do so. Any reports from you guys on MPG with bigger cams? I know the aerodynamics of a camaro are much more forgiving...

Something like this. Call Geoff personally and ask him to help you customize it to your car.

Here's a dyno of one of his "baby" cams:

What heads would be on this? Are they the 241 heads?

In that thread the heads were bone stock untouched 243's.

Yes, that's ridiculous power. And faster than I actually want (or need) to go!

I'm wondering if I could make similar power with this engine? So are the heads the same on a 2002 SS Camaro engine?

No, the heads are from the ls6 vette / cts-v or ls2's. They are worth 15 rwhp-ish in stock form over the 241's.

Cool. I am new to the LS1 scene. My other car is a '69 Nova with a traditional SBC that is becoming a 9 second car. I understand stuff about those engines a little better. I can get this 72,000 mile setup for $2800 to my door complete. Accessories, computer, everything. Cheap for the power...

Blasphemy!

I have a race car. It goes fast, and I can bang gears, too! Now stickshift racing, that's expensive.

I like going fast, but when I drive something every day it's tempting to get into more trouble!
