General LSX Automobile Discussion - I need something to put between my frame and y pipe

I have Pacesetter LT headers and a TSP y pipe. Under throttle it is hitting my transmission cross member. It is loud, annoying, and can trip the knock sensor. What have you all used to insulate that area? I would like to keep vibration down as much as possible, but some sort of rubber there would probably cure 90% of the problem. Will header wrap work? Or would that still vibrate like crazy?

poly engine mounts & no more pipe banging the floor.

Its to late for that now. I forgot all about doing motor mount until after I had the headers on. Wish I would have done them now....

i have the same setup.
Just use a piece of 5/8 heater hose, and run a 3" hose clamp threw it to secure it down.
Working pretty good for me.

rag.
use a metal cable tie to keep it on the y pipe.
Or just man up and do the motor mounts. Mine are going in this weekend.

Yup. Poly mounts should take care of excess vibration throughout the exhaust.

I'd do the motor mounts. Do it right and be done with it.

I would but I do not have time to tear my car apart again. Not right now anyways. Maybe sometime this summer I can, but for now I need something temporary.
The heater hose isn't melting? I know the exhaust doesn't get extremely hot, but I figured it would be enough to melt a heater hose.

polly motor mounts don't stop mine from banging. i'm gonna try the heater hose and hose clamp idea.

In that case, give the heater hose a shot.

Well, it's a heater hose, 200+ degree coolant travels through, it's designed to withstand some heat, mine has been in for a month and no signs of melting.

Hey guys,
Mufflex makes a Y-Pipe Bumpstop that normally fixes that issue. Here is a link to it on our site.

Let me know if I can help anymore.

same problem here, having my aftermarket y pipe bang the floor under heavy acceleration, can't wait to get it fixed.

kinda pricey on the mufflex but i guess it gets the job done lol. There is definitely cheaper alternative fixes.

I tried that thing a few years ago. It didn't work for me. I ended up with the heated hose mod! It works, but look looks so ghetto.

edit: poly motor mounts too

Poly motor mounts will help, but take your car back to the muffler shop. Have them heat up the metal that is hitting the floor and pull down about an inch. It wont hit again.

Well that sucks that you gotta put heater hose under there so it doesnt bang. My guess would be its because of the TSP Y. I heard their Y-pipe is different. This is the same setup I was gonna go with. Kinda why I went with BBK LTs & ORY. Theyre fairly cheap & they fit great.

The TSP y pipe doesn't have much clearance on the frame on the drivers side. It doesn't hang down that far though.
If I had my choice I would have purchased the pacesetter Y instead of the TSP. However, I got everything brand new for 200$.....so I couldn't be picky.

I hear ya, thats a very good deal. From what I heard you dont want the pacesetter Y either, its a terrible merge they just blasted a hole in part of the Y & welded another pipe on there & it makes your exhaust sound like shit.

I never really paid attention to the one on my LT1, but it had very good clearance. I figured the person who originally bought all of the stuff I ended up with went with a TSP y pipe for a reason.

ok, i put a piece of heater hose in between the y and frame and also in between the y and cross member. i works beautifully, no more banging or rubbing of any kind from the exhaust. i just have a slight knock from my torque arm, but it's a tunnel mounted torque arm so that's normal and not very annoying. thanks for the suggestion to use the heater hose mischief

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but this is a remedy. It will work, but it does not fix what is happening.
poly engine mounts & no more pipe banging the floor.
Here is your solution.
The TSP y pipe doesn't have much clearance on the frame on the drivers side. It doesn't hang down that far though.
If I had my choice I would have purchased the pacesetter Y instead of the TSP. However, I got everything brand new for 200$.....so I couldn't be picky.
My brother and I just replaced his Pacesetter ORY with a TSP ORY. The Pacesetter was terribly raspy and although it tucks under the car pretty well, its no match for the flow of the TSP with the Flowmaster Merge.
The TSP ORY allows for quite a bit of adjustment. We were able to get the driverside of it away from the underbody a reasonable distance and still allow for decent ground clearance.
You'll never get the clearance from an aftermarket Y-pipe that you have with the flattened stock Y, so sacrificing some ground clearance is a necessary evil when adding LTs.
Maybe a simple adjustment to the midpipe that connects the collector piece to the Merge of the ORY, could allow for a bit more room between your floorpan and the Y-pipe and possibly alleviate the problem. Like said, you'll give up a little ground clearance, but its to be expected.
Good luck. :thumb:
