De-screening you MAF?
I have heard guys on here talking about de-screening their MAF. How do you do this. Exactly where is this screen? What gains do you see?

I agree dont take it off, it actually stops debris that makes it past the fliter, my car was horrible about that when I first got it and changed the filter, had to clean all of it off the screen.
Since that it hadnt built up any but its possible for stuff to get through, be it something harmful itd be costly I would think
Screen is at the front of the mass air flow sensor, your better off buying a bigger one if your that worried about flow through it. Although everyone on here says the slp one isnt any good mine hasnt had issues.

Ok so you want to remove the screen in the MAF? Do it. Its useless. Straightens out flow? I think our intake tracts are already straight as can be. They are 'common' parts on truck motors that have a hella bent intake tube design. Think they protect? Try finding a screen on a higher dollar zo6

I wouldn't remove it. It's purpose isn't neccessarily to "straighten" the air flow. It diffuses the air flow/lessens turbulence, and creates a more consistent volume of air across across the MAF and it's sensors. Removing it may or may not cause surging or idle problems... I doubt you would feel any difference from a performance standpoint, but it's your car so... YMMV

Take it all with a grain of salt. I descreen and ported my maf. My car saw a .2 1/4 mile gain but on the dyno it detonated above 5000rpm's. I was pulling 5 counts of knock (max on a stock ls1 from what im told). On the street it doesnt seem to detonate as long as I make sure I get good fuel. Everything the local tuners have told me is the factory MAF in factory form is perfectly fine unless youre looking for much higher hp numbers or boost. I plan on throwing a stock maf back on mine shortly.

I think this is the right answer here. I have had it both ways, I ported one and removed the airfoil in the middle and the screens, and it showed no real difference from the stock setup. The chance of causing a problem outweighs a tiny hp gain you might see. We don't drive hondas here, no need to dig for 1hp gains.

OMFG, there's only 50,000 threads in the archives about this. Straightening air is bullshit. The reduced area that the screen creates speeds air velocity under low intake air velocity conditions such as @ idle, that's it.
You can remove the screen as long as you have tuning software to modify the MAF table or have a tuner do it. If you don't tune, it's not ideal, but, fuel trims should balance the difference.

fwiw i took my screen out when i ported my tb and made my custom intake. it made a noticeable difference in throttle response. but i did all three at the same time so i cant tell u how much of the gain is contributed by the de-screen. my guess is very little tho.

When I bought my truck back in 02 it was descreened. I bought a stock replacement to get the screen back after hearing some opinions of this site and I couldn't believe how much better it ran with the screen. Definitely keep it on.

mine was descreened before i bought it, i have never had an issue, and the car runs great. BUT if it was on there when i bought it, i dont know if i would have removed it. its personal preference honestly. If you feel like the car will run "faster" or "better" with it descreened, then go for it.
