My belt walked off ????
About 2 weeks ago I drove the SS to work and while i was waiting to fill up I heard this noise from under the hood. The check gauges light came on.When I opened the hood and the belt came off and split in two sections. I was able to use half of the old belt to get home. I had my wife go to autozone and get a new belt but they gave her the a/c belt. What would make that happen? All the pullies seem to line up right. I don't drive the car a lot. maybe 400 miles since Oct. of last year. But I will drive it more with the better weather.

YUP....soon as I had my 427ci put in back in 2002 and did a WOT run for the first time I threw my belt. Put it back on on the side of the road....took off and wacked the throttle again and it flew off again.
Got the Katech fixed tensioner and its never come since, 8 years now.
Very nice piece for modded engines, but if its just a stock or bolt-on engine the belt should stay on no matter what. The factory stock tensioner just can't handle the fast revs and power of modded engines. I never once threw a belt for the 4 years my engine was stock.

Did you change the belt last time or someone else? The reason I ask is that when you put a wrench on the tensioner to relieve the tension and remove the old belt, if you are a real he-man and use too much force you can bend the bolt that runs through the tensioner or even crack the tensioner body.
Take a closer look at the tensioner and if it seems fine it was probably just a bad belt.

if the belt split, there is probably a foreign object lodged into one of the pulleys, like a rock as mentioned. I had one come in the shop that was split in two, before I put the new belt on, i made sure I spun and inspected the pulleys where it wore the belt, sure enough there was a rock in the alternator pulley, I took a pick and it took some force to get it out. then it was all great. Sure as hell sounds like that is the problem.

^^what he said. Once you put an UD pulley on these cars, you'll throw your belt everytime you race it just about. I got the comp cams adjustable tensioner and haven't thrown a belt since. You gotta upgrade your tensioner to one of the adjustable ones that you tighten down where you want it at... That's the only way to solve your problem.
