Default Break in period - Are 500 miles required?

I just had gears and a truetrac installed. I did a search and it seems like the manufacturers emphasis the heat cycle break in procedures but don't say you need 500 miles to break in the gears. Some say you need miles for towing but that doesn't apply to me.

But on the forums when people ask the question it seems like the answer always includes a 500 mile break in.

So do you really need 500 miles before racing?

Not sure it matters but I have a Moser 12 bolt.

Thanks

The break in period will make for a quieter gear set. Pure drag cars are not concerned about noise, and four or five 10 minute idle in gear with the rear up in the air heat cycles will do the job. Bob

Thanks a bunch. I've already done 4 heat cycles so maybe one more and I'll be good to go.

Bob - By the way, I saw all the problems you posted about the TrueTrac but I didn't want to go with a spool so I didn't know what to do. I just went with the truetrac. Would a wavetrac be a much better choice? I didn't even know about them until after I bought the truetrac. It's a 6 spd car w/ maybe 550 rwhp (427).

I haven't had a single problem with my trutrac but I've heard that the one in the dana is much stronger than the ones for the 12 bolt and 9in.

Did you go with a Truetrac or a Trac-Loc? The Trac-Loc seems to be much more reliable than the newer Truetracs. The Wavetrac would be the best choice of the three, as it can handle a lot more power. Bob
