Default 1994 z28 wont stay running

i have replaced the opti, head gaskets, plugs, and had the transmission rebuilt. I finally got it all back together and test drove it around my block a few times and on the highway and it ran ok meaning it did not turn off. I stuck it back in the shop and replaced some bolts on the A frame and adjusted the valves, and after that coundn't get to stay running. It starts and runs for about 5 minutes and dies, i try to start it agian and it just backfires, and blows black smoke out the tail pipes the only thing that i can notice is the 5 volts missing to the (iat) and there are no codes. It is a 1994 z28 lt1 stock.

You might have the valves adjusted improperly..Try to adjust them again.

did you locktite the rotor screws? seal cap? who made the new opti?...check entire wiring harness for splits nearly every electrical connection in my 93 had exposed bare wires from being twisted during assembly at base of connection plugs 16-17yrs of heat ain't good for wires/sensors sounds like something is getting heat stressed/cross wired and failing.....

^^^Sounds to me like your problem lies in one of those three things.

1) Make sure the plug wires are all tight and going to the right spark plug, then check the order again.
2) Hopefully you have a genuine AC Delco/Delphi opti installed.
3) I would readjust the rockers while the engine is running.

As for your issue with the IAC, I would get the wiring tested. But even with a bad/malfunctioning IAC, the car will start if you keep the throttle cracked open a little.
