Wow, how awesome is this...Champ Car basically fell to pieces and hasnt returned to Houston. F1 left the US a couple years back because Indianapolis couldn't deliver and now they're bringing F1 to my backyard.

Super Sweet!!!
Can't wait. Thought I was the only person that woke up early on Saturdays for the best qualifying format in auto racing and Sundays to watch the F1 races. Does the race have a date set yet? Going to make hotel reservations as soon as they do!! See ya'll there.

So, I got excited when I read this. Then I emailed several folks I knew to tell them. Then I say down and started to look up this Tavo Hellmund that the story references. Tavo (C.T.) Hellmund, is the son of Tavo Hellmund, an Austin car dealer, who was also the promoter of the CART races in Mexico City in 1981 and 1982.

So basically we have a guy whose biggest claim to fame I can find so far is that he raced for Tim Beverly (Tim went to jail for money laundering and bank fraud).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Beverly
Tavo competes in the NASCAR short track program who is now going to bring us an F1 event.
Then you read that he doesn't even have a site for the track yet.

And, this "facility" is supposed to be built and operational for a race in June of 2012. An F1 facilty is going to cost $200-$300M USD. That is some serious funding to have to come up with. Not to mention the planning, approval and construction to get done is sucha short timeframe.
The sanctioning fee a promoter has to pay F1 just to hold an event is over 30 mil, thats just for the right to hold the event. That feee could well be higher (as much as $50M by 2012).
Hmmmm call me skeptical after reading it. The current opinion of many is that this was a move to exert some leverage on New York and Las Vegas. I think a lot of folks are all for it. I'm just wondering who is going to bankroll it. The other thing is that Bernie Eccelstone has a reputation that everyone who deals with him ends up regretting it.

During F1 qualifying this weekend, they were talking about how the deal for the F1 track in Austin has actually been the in the works for the last year or so.
And you Texans will have a hometown boy. Karun Chandhok's mom is from Texas. His new nickname is going to be Cowboy Karun.
