Is this suppose to happen?
I've been running without catalytic converters on my 402 stroker motor for about a year now. To quiet it down some, I decided to install a pair of catalytic converters.
This morning I finally got done fabbing up a pair of 3" x 11" magnaflow spun-cat metallic converters (part #59929) after my 1 7/8" headers into a 3" to 4" Y-pipe. After a quick drive around the block, both catalytic converters starting glowing bright red. After about 4 minutes of idling, they're still glowing bright red. My tune is dead on (without cats). I'm worried about driving the car around in this condition because of the thought of the cats melting, clogging up, then stalling my motor. Do I need to have the car retuned with the cats on to remedy the problem...or is this condition supposed to happen?
Any help would be appreciated.

Those are flex pipes. Something like this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PSM-82-4216/

It's on a MAF tune using a sensor from an LS7 mounted on a 4" intake. Doc, from EFIAlchemy, did my N/A tune.
It definitely has the cool factor. But it won't be so cool when my carpet catches on fire or something worse. I wouldn't be complaining as much if this was happening to my rear muffler at night.

My headers on my lil ranger glow red at night but that's normal...I mean a engine produces alot of heat n all...lol
You have coated headers or wrapped not letting heat disperse I dunno maybe shitty cats? No idea though lol. I would take those cats off or put some thick heat sheild by floor n such until you figure the problem out. Better safe than sry you know?

So you're running with MAF, and CL...?
If your tune is good (as said check it, with a wideband), then maybe you have cylinder(s) misfiring and/or leaking injectors (i.e. some source of overfueling).

Yes, it's running a MAF. Whether it's OL OR CL, I couldn't tell you. Although I installed 99% of the parts on my car, when it comes to tuning, I'm 100% hands off. I'll try hooking up a wideband and seeing if the tune is off. My seat of the pants dyno says it's on :-) I would bring my car back to EFIAlchemy, but it's a struggle driving the 3 hrs.

I'd say your tuner may have set your fuel a little rich to begin with for a cat-less install and when you clogged that airflow with those cats, you got a richer air/fuel ratio.
Do you have a scan tool that'll let you record long term fuel trim as you drive? It'll give you any idea if you are running rich.

To be honest with you, I have no idea. I just told my tuner to remove all emissions and everything not related to making the car faster. I'm not even sure where to look to see if its CL or OL. I'm not sure if you can tell from my tune file, but I attached it for your reference.

You guys realize that hotter means leaner, not richer, right?
My guess is your idle/cruise A:F ratio is above 14.7. Anything in the 15's will cause cats to overheat like this.
