rod bearing replacement

rod bearing replacement hey I'm going to be putting a new set of rod brearings and crank bearings in my 97 camaro. can i do this just by jacking up the engine? does anyone have any pointers for me. Also what brand of brearing would you run. a part number from summit would help alot. Thanks

Technically yes you could drop the pan and do it, but chances are it would only last a few hundred miles. If the bearings need replaced, chances are something caused it and their is also damage to the crank journals so the only way to do it right it drop it out.

haha that would be nice. Ive built plenty of motors so i can do the work. i haven't spun a bearing or anything yet its just my oil pressure is low and i have 150k on the motor. so basicly i just want to just put new bearings in while i save to build a forged motor. Im on a tight buget now.

what is your oil pressures? i have 174,000 on clock and still haul'n.
you cant do cam bearings with motor in car, what about those?..
...cam bearings can also go causing oiling issues.....
might just need to try a diff oil and save yer money for that professionally built forged motor. your gonna think OH ****! when you a.(drop a piston) b.(dont fix the problem) or c.(cant figure out why the oil pump wont prime next.......my 2cent.

I'm not sure but to get the pan off and bearings in I think it might be easier to just pull the motor...and if the motor comes out then you might as well hone and re ring it.
A friend has it down to ~2.5 hrs to take the motor out the bottom of a Camaro and I definately do not envy you doing the bearings with the motor in the car.
IF you insist on a minimum 'fix' I would definately do a new oil pump along with the new bearings!

I have always had good luck with Clevite as well.
I'm not sure but to get the pan off and bearings in I think it might be easier to just pull the motor...and if the motor comes out then you might as well hone and re ring it.

1. yes you can undo the mounts to lift the motor to remove the pan
2. what are you going to do about the engine cradle being in the way?
3. did you think about removing the transmission and the timing set to get to the crank bearings?
4. how do you plan on installing new bearings while balancing everything else from upside down?

my oil pressure at idle is around 5 psi and 25 when im driving. my engine is quite and the lifters are pumped up (not making any noise) so im thinking i will try the cheapest thing posable right now. last time a changed my oil there was metal shavings on my drain plug. if the main, rod and new oil pump dont fix it then i will be pulling the motor. whats done to your car? whats your oil pressure at?
what are you basing your pressure from? dash gauge? mechanical gauge? ...try a heavier oil and a mechanical gauge before tearing up your motor
