Default Is it normal to get random knock retard counts on cold startup?

I get some random knock counts with my LT1 & LT4 KM's on cold startup. I actually get more with the LT4 KM. Once the motor is warm, all the KR is gone.

Is this normal?

i would say its nothing to worry about. assuming your pistons are forged, they expand alot when they get warm. maybe some piston slap...anyone else?

You always get knock counts when the starter engages (it reads all that starter noise). Is that what you mean? It should not continue after startup and the key is back to ON.

It gets some random counts for a minute or two only when cold and once you are actually moving. Sometimes at idle but not much. Once its at normal operating temps, no KR. Sounds reasonable it could be slap from the forged pistons.

i had a forged 383 in my old lt1 z, it had knock counts until it warmed up a lil. by no means were they drastic and long lasting, but they were there. i talked with JE and they told me it would be normal. my piston to wall clearance was on the loose side also, it was a boosted engine

Are you getting actual knock that is pulling timing, or is it just the knock count parameter increasing? If its the latter, I would not be concerned. I've never figured out what that number truely does or means.

Interesting.. I know a guy who runs a machine shop that couldn't get a customer to understand that this certain brand of forged piston would be noisier until it warmed up.

I used to get knock counts, but no knock retard. It would happen randomly too though, not just at start up consistently. I would think that if you are seeing counts only you're fine. Count's with retard at start up only I wouldn't think is normal, but assuming it goes away I don't think is hurting anything.
