This is a 25.5 to 25.3 upgrade I've been working on for a while now...ended up adding or replacing something like 25 bars
Added the last of the gussets yesterday and started painting it today. Got the first coat done in the driver area, need to put a coat on in the rear area, then do a 2nd coat. Using Rustoleum HAMMERED paint...stuff is pretty bada$$
Going to try to cert it in a few weeks...once certed, I'll get all the floor pans fully welded in...

For the same reasons you just mentioned I just ordered the 25.3 book today (after already buying the 25.4 book) since its being built right now to give it a little added value and to save a ton of time and money down the road if I ever need that spec. It's always better to have a little more than not enough.
Looks good BTW!!

Looks great. I have a dumb question though, I thought 25.3 required rear frame rails all the way to the back. I'm going by memory, I don't have the book in front of me, I could be wrong.

There is a unibody variation listed in the spec... Says two 1 5/8" bars of any length on 6x6 plates.

Good. I'm planning on doing the same thing to mine (25.5 to 25.3). I don't really want to add any more than I have to. If you remove the stock floors & replace with sheet metal, does that "delete" the uni-body rule?

yes...that variation assumed stock floors remained.

I need to verify availability, but I plan on taking the car for cage certification wednesday night.
Also, a few weeks ago I dropped off my pontiac emblem wing strut supports (that go on the bumper) to a local shop that is doing a brand new spray "chrome" process (its actually silver-based). They got the chrome part done. The next step is to leave the border and the tabs chrome and do the rest of it in a translucent red. Should look "close" to an actual pontiac emblem when finished
here is one of them after the "chrome" step
http://home.comcast.net/~tfranklin5580/wing_strut_support.jpg
they should look similar to this when done

Awesome! Looks like a ton of extra bars in the cage. I take it that is all part of the cert. process? That cage has got to weigh a ton any idea on the cage alone?
Fireball
07-07-2010, 06:15 AM
yes...almost all the bars were required by the spec. there are a few optional bars that I put in for extra precaution (didn't need them due to being unibody). Also added 3 extra gussets that weren't required by spec, but they were a good idea overall.
weighs probably 150-180lbs
we've weighed a 8pt sportsman cage and it came in at ~75lbs. this has double the bars easy.

Congrats!
I have a few noob questions for you guys since you're already here... :)
At what Et/mph do you need to have a roll cage like that?
Why is the roll cage called a "25.5/25.3"?
Why is the "25.3" and upgrade to a "25.5"?
How fast can you go in the 1/4mi with a 10/12pt roll cage?
thanks :)

Ill take a crack at this :)
1. 8.49 or quicker in the 1/4 will need a SFI chassis
2. The 25.5 25.3 25.2 etc is a SFI spec for a chassis/cage. They do that since it is an advanced ET and is much more complicated than a 10 point. There is actually a book for each cert.
3. I dont remember the exact difference from 25.5 to 25.3, but I think 25.3 lets you go faster with less weight than 25.5, but more weight than 25.2? I am not 100% on that, but I know 25.3 is somewhat aimed at radial racers because of they were falling between the two specs.
4. You can go 8.50 with a 10/12 point.
Hope that helps!

almost correct...
25.3 lets you go 1sec faster at the same weight (3600lb max) compared to a 25.5.
25.5 is 7.50 et at 3600lb
25.3 is 6.50 et at 3600lb
25.2 is 6.00 et at 3200lb

Well I was close :) I knew it was faster, but I thought it was a different weight. Maybe I was thinking of the weight difference between 25.2 and 25.3
