Default Trying to find a part...

I'm trying to find what I believe is called an upper rail for a 2000 camaro (93-02 should all be the same) its the part of the frame that the outside of the fender rests on. The fender lays on top of the frame and bolts in, the part of the frame it bolts to is straight but the outer section of the frame that connects to it is what I need to replace. I tried gmpartsdirect but apparently the part is discontinued now so I was hoping someone here might be able to help me find one. I hope my description makes sense I can email pics if anyone needs to see what I'm talking about. Thanks

I've heard of VPI now also, they might have it, but they won't deal with me over the phone since I'm not a dealer and their website is pretty confusing. I can't find the same part# as above. If anybody knows of any way I can get this part please help. Thanks.

I tried to order it but they said the part was discontinued. Its still listed on the site but they don't have it anymore. When you go to order it a message pops up something like either the part # has changed or is discontinued. I emailed them and got an email back saying it was discontinued.

I might need to get that number, I'm gonna keep trying to find one new somewhere but I'm definitely not having much luck right now. I'm gonna check with some friends at some local gm dealerships and see if they can't help me out. In the meantime, if anyone knows where I can find one of these please let me know.

This question may be better in a new thread but I'm curious, how big of a mistake would it be to just drill out the welds and remove the apron (outer part of framerail, I think) all together? I'm sure it would cut down on some weight but I know it would also be removing some of the frame and that I would think would have some negative effects on the car. This car is not a daily driver and I've seen drag cars with this section completely removed. I would do it on both sides if I were to do it at all. Is this just a stupid idea?

Thanks bluls1 you've been very very helpful ever since the last thread. Also what's your opinion on ^ the post above? I'm getting so tired of trying to find a new one I'm considering eliminating them.

to each his own but if it was one of my cars i wouldnt. i did have one that we cut the upper rails off of and used tubes that tied the cage and the rails together but that was built for a race car only. plus we did it all with the car chained to a frame machine with laser going to make sure the car stayed straight,
