Default Powersteering Pump Repair???

I see on sites, such as Rock Auto and Summitracing that you can buy just the "pump" for our powersteering pumps which seems to be the cheaper route than buying the whole assembly. Mine is making that god awful whining noise and I know thats what it is so I figured I would just try that. Has anybody ever tried this or should I just buy the whole assembly?

That depends. Do you have a puller to get the pulley off of the old one? And a way to drive the pulley on the new pump that doesn't involve a hammer? If the answer to both of those yes, then go for it. If no, buy the whole unit.

well...I did have to take off the old one (pulley) and put on a new one with a pulley puller so Im guessing that I can do this then.

most auto parts stores rent the pulley remover/installer. buy the pump only and swap all the parts. beside it's nearly impossible to get to the bolts holding it in place without first removing the pulley.
